My early Vogue has the center console arm rest factory phone tray, which is a bit of a mess and out of date now.
I picked up a non phone tray to swap over and make it more a useful storage area , then got to thinking about adding a wireless phone charger.
You can buy simple rubber mat chargers with a lead, but then saw a Youtube vid were the guts of a charger are mounted on the underside of a tray ( in a BMW ) and got to thinking this might make for a cleaner install.
I'll be pulling the console out and installing another one I bought with leather side panels and replacing the gas struts and cleaning everything up etc.
Anyone got any thoughts on why not or install ideas ?

I’m wanting a wireless charger/cradle somewhere on the dash. I have Apple Watch also and notice some of the chargers have a separate place to charge these also.
Would look a bit odd just plonked on the dash though.... am hunting around for something a little more ‘integrated.’

I've done the same on a spare console I bought to cut-up & modify.
It's great for a discrete way of charging a phone while using the cars' BT to receive calls - but no use if you want to use the phone as a SatNav while charging it. For me the downside is not a problem as I use a TomTom rather than the phone or RR system. Paul,

Interesting. Any details on the charger you used, just mounted on the underside of the tray etc ? I have an Android unit in the car now, so this displays Google maps on a bigger screen but with the phone providing a WI-FI hotspot

The charger I used appears to be no longer available from the seller I used - maybe because it only cost £4.99.
I also bought 1 of these as a back-up for less than £10.

The only difference between the 2 is 1 uses a USB C connector, the other a standard Micro USB. Both came with an 18inch cable.
Most of these chargers are approx 100mm in dia & about 7 or 8mm thick.
If you modify a console to fit one, make sure you leave a bit of spare space - just in case you need to replace it with a different part later that's got slightly different dimensions.
I modified the console so that the charger sat in the bottom & the phone just rests on top of it, located by some 10mm thick foam I cut to fit the rest of the console.
I cut the console with a dremel then filled the "missing areas" with fibreglass & a small amount of body filler to smarten up the finish before a quick spray with Halfords rubber finish spray paint.

1 thing I've noticed from in-house use of these 15W chargers is that they can get themselves & the phone very hot if charging an almost flat battery. On one occasion my phone bleeped strangely & was warning me charging had been disabled as the phone was too hot. When I picked it up, it was really hot ! I decide some time in the fridge was the best way of cooling it to the wife's surprise
If I need another charger I'll probably by a 10W charger - as it will generate less heat ![/url] Paul,

Thanks. I got a 10w board and thinned down the plastic tray a little and installed.
Seems like the old wiring harness could be simplified and chopped to give this power and plug in to the main loom. I'll have to find a wiring diagram for a 2002 car system.
I've painted the phone tray with PlastiDip and repainted the silver underside of the arm rest to clean everything up and it looks good.
