Possible gps problem

Hi all
While repairing my leaking rear wiper motor I’ve noticed some chaffing on a cable that goes to the gps Ariel amplifier XUI500021 A for a while I’ve been having intermittent signal problem with my gps so I did the cheap fix with a aftermarket gps Ariel putting it inside the shark Finn.
But I’m still having intermittent signal loss could this damaged wire be the problem even though I’ve fitted a new gps Ariel ??
If so how do I fix it ?
Thanks

Damaged wire

Pretty sure the part exposed doesn't want to be earthed so yes I think it will effect signal, tape it up, try to reroute it a bit and see how it goes... Thumbs Up Pete

Is that a screened cable, can't quite make it out.
If it is you need to make sure none of the screening is touching the central cable core if the core is exposed. If it is have a poke about to make sure nothing is touching the cable core and as Haylands says tape it up and see what happens. Hopefully the gps will work as normal. Thumbs Up

What do you mean by screened?
It’s like a tv Ariel cable with a solid core surrounded by plastic then a multi wired outer with flexi plastic on outer

It's a screened cable. Thumbs Up
It's important the insulated central solid core is not touching the outer metal screening.
If the core insulation is ok no problem.
As the screening is damaged a bit I would be inclined to wrap the damaged bit with some aluminium foil and then tape over the lot with insulating tape. Should be as new then.

Thanks
So as long as the core is ok and not exposed or touching anything it should be ok?

Think of the inner core as a wire (it is Wink ) the outer screen - the mesh - is another wire.

If they are touching each other or someting else metal then you would get a short circuit. If they are touching intermittently then that could explain your problem.

As said above, tape it up making sure the outer isn't touching the inner John

Access the sat nav diagnostic screen using a similar method to way you do the other diagnostics on the screen - the 753 method. In this screen you can monitor the connections to the satellites and see how long it takes to connect and how many satellites you are connected to.

After a trip to LR for a repaint of my roof, due to damage done by Auto Glass, I needed a new aerial thanks to LR, and had similar issues for quite a long time. The nav unit was extremely slow to pick up satellites. Once I had a new shark fin (£80 I think), things continued to improve and now I no longer have any delays getting a signal But worth noting that even after the new aerial it still took time to connect for a few weeks, so that makes me wonder if the unit builds up a database of "known/working" connections that it tries first, and over time the more connections saved, the easier it gets to reconnect? - Just a theory.

Cloud cover, tree cover will all affect signal strength.

Pointless hobnob comment: GPS satellites are slowly obsoleting themselves as parts fail on them and no they longer being maintained, it is a system that will fail completely unless someone like Jeff B or Elon M take it on. I imagine any drone based delivery from Amazon will need GPS so possibly there is a business case for Bezos.

Many current devices are now using the three systems simultaneously - GPS (American), GLONASS (Russian), and Galileo (European Space Agency).

I suspect the USA military would have a continuing interest in an updated GPS. John

You would think that wouldn't you? Apparently not. It was the USA military that maintained the satellites, and the news has reported for many years now that the support would cease. This is the very raison d'etre for Galileo. I am surprised that GPS uses three systems though as GPS uses NMEA protocol and I was not aware Galileo was intended to be compatible. Good news if it is though/ and I have not looked at the latest news on it for some years now.

As I understand it, the three systems are being used independently and it is the receiving equipment which does the reconciliation. Not GPS using the other two.

Thanks Weegie, that has brought me up to date. I had no idea GPS III was even a thing. There is backwards compatibility so all that kerfuffle, back in the first decade of the 21stC, that led to Galileo was a storm in a teacup in the end; it seems there was no need for Galileo after all.
