2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

The bearings in the Supercharger definitely weren’t right on this car. I spoke to Powerhouse who reckoned it was the bearings that are cast into the case at the front. They can repair them but the lead time on the parts for this specific repair was 3-4 weeks.

I’m inpatient so I found a used Supercharger with a 6 month warranty on it so have bought that and if this one starts to get noisy I’ll have the other one rebuilt so there’s no down time for the car.

Last night I removed the old charger and when undoing the plug from the MAF sensor the smallest wire on the plug snapped as soon as I touched it.

I released the pin from the plug in the hope that I could open it up and replaced the tail on it but it was crimped so tight it wouldn’t budge.

I moved on and started to do the diff oils when I had a thought. Thanks to Spud for pointing out that this was the MAF. I Googled the part number on the sensor that the plug goes into and found that it was also common to the Mk 2 1.6 Petrol Ford Focus.

A quick call to a local scrap yard and I found out they had a Focus in stock. 30 mins later I was back at home with a plug and tails from the MAF sensor on the Focus.

I’ve removed one of the pins from the plug from the Focus and will add it to the plug on the Range Rover tomorrow and then solder the tail to the cars wiring loom.

I also got all of the diff oils done today. I ordered the oils from Land Rover directly as I wanted to be sure I was putting the right stuff in the right place. The oils I drained out were reasonably clean but the rear diff was overfilled. I reckon it’s been filled to the drain plug rather then having the specified amount of fluid put in it. Hopefully it’s not going to have done any damage.

It looks like the rear bearings on the charger are definitely knackered. Most of the notable wear is on the rear of the rotors next to the needle bearings that are part of the case. Powerhouse have given me a few checks to do so that I know for sure what it's worth doing with this charger. If it can be rebuilt, I'll rebuild it and keep it for a spare.

Unfortunately, on Saturday, when I was cleaning the bolts to fit the new Supercharger I noticed that the threads on one of them were shiny. Upon closer inspection, they were full of aluminium. The steel bolts have been in the aluminium block for 13 years and decided to bring the threads out with it. I cleaned the bolt up and it went back into the hole in the block by hand but when I went to nip it, the

just became loose.

The threads are back to normal service again this evening thankfully. The hole was drilled, tapped, and a Wurth time-sert was inserted. Hopefully my envelope of goodies from Duckworths will arrive tomorrow and I can begin with reassembly and hopefully get it finished.

Thanks for that.

I replaced the PCV valve as I could hear an audible leak and hadn't considered doing the pipe as well. It does make sense though as access is made much easier when the charger is off.

I've ordered that pipe from the local dealer so it'll be here tomorrow, allowing me to put it back together over the weekend.

£107 before any discount so an expensive piece of plastic!

it really is, i didn't bother replacing it, instead I got some 22mm and jubilee clips. snapped off the plastic ring boom. i was laid on car for best part of 3 hours haha.

i also did the intake breather hose. ill be doing the side that goes into pcv next.

i did have a question about pcv operation. at idle and the pressure is at its highest, the pcv should be closed right since it'll be sucking super hard? Its actually a sport

I'm not entirely sure to be honest.

When my car is cold I can blow through the new and old PCV in both directions. If I remove it after the car has been running for a bit and it's warmed up I can't blow through it in both directions so presumably it's wide open when cold and starts doing something when it's warmed up a bit.

Once I've got the Supercharger back on this weekend I'll have a look/listen again.

so i had my pcv removed while car was running with my hand plugging the bottom of it. i assume if its sucking then it must be good?

i still have a 10% leak somewhere though

although when my pcv is installed i can hear it but it was only replaced about a year ago Its actually a sport

I could hear a leak on mine and replacing the PCV appears to have done it but I’m doing the pipe for peace of mind.

How are you measuring it to realise that it’s a 10% leak?

actually ive managed to lose one of the screws a couple weeks back so I need to order one of them, and one to attach the heater hoses to the back of the manifold 😂 Its actually a sport

It’s been a productive if slightly frustrating weekend unfortunately.

The replacement Supercharger was fitted, new seals were put on the coolant manifold, the cooling system was filled up and I started the car. I was gutted to hear that the replacement Supercharger I’ve bought has got the exact same noise as the old one. It’s disappointing as I was assured it was a good one. It does however have a 6 month warranty on it. I’m happy to keep it if the price is adjusted as it’ll let me use the car whilst I send my old one off for rebuilding.

The fan shroud on the car is broken so I need to order a new one of them but it is back together now. The engine cover is damaged so I’m tempted to look for one of them too.

I then had to top up the oil in the gearbox and set the level. It must have been low as after draining it, doing the solenoids and seals and reassembly it took 8.2 litres of Lifeguard 6. Whilst I waited for the gearbox oil to come up to temperature I got my Snap On polishing tool out and cleaned the exhaust tips. They’re better but still not perfect. I’ll have another go atthem at some point.

I then fitted the new grill, put my number plate on it and once I’d set the gearbox oil level I reset the gearbox adaptations. Fingers crossed I don’t regret doing the adaptions.

I was going to get it out of the workshop this afternoon but decided to change the tow bar wiring loom to 13 pin whilst the car was inside.

I’ll get it outside one evening this week and hopefully will get it MOT’d this week too before giving it a proper wash next weekend as it is filthy.

Well, we’re onto the final, little jobs now.

The Bluetooth module in the car was knackered and had been bypassed when it arrived. The connector had a nice green mess inside it so I didn’t even bother trying to rescue it. I made a cheeky offer for the later module on eBay and it arrived today. I made a wiring harness to go from the existing plug to the new plug and we’ve now got working Bluetooth again.

Tomorrow I’m going to sand and polish the headlights before applying a UV coating as they’re ever so slightly cloudy and then fix the new tow bar wiring socket to the armature with the bracket that arrived from Rob today.

Once that’s done the car is finished and ready for it’s MOT.

Will need to find another project to cure boredom now.

That's great news and good luck with the MOT. Its been an interesting story to follow, particularly the issues that my car shared with yours.

You end with one of the first jobs I did on mine and that was to repair a badly damaged MOST connection to the Bluetooth module. The module worked fine after that so I have no idea why it was so badly bodged.
