Good afternoon all, I have a question relating to steering being heavy. This week I parked my car at the aero plane port on Monday morning, no issues, pick up car on Thursday afternoon & immediately heavy steering. Pulled over & checked belt OK, fluid level OK, drove home. Checked the next day with my wife steering left to right & I have fluid flow in the tank so pump is still doing something. I have been told it is most likely electrical, rang a local LR aftermarket regarding the steering transducer & they have never even sold one let alone have one to sell so obviously not a common fault (thought it would be a cheap shot in the dark fix). Anyway the only other thing to happen at the same time is every time I start the car the LH mirror goes berserk trying to unfold further that it should until I hit the mirror adjust buttons to stop it.

Could this be all related to the BCU & can you plug another one in without coding just to test if it is the problem then get it coded later?

BCU can be swapped without coding. do a search on here. there is lots of info on this. Is one of your rear doors refusing to unlock as well? that's another sign of BCU probs.

BCU (aka BCM and Body Control Unit) sounds like your most likely cause.

After my heavy steering problems a while ago, I put together a summary of all the likely causes identified by various forum members etc.

Assuming your problem is the BCM you can create a temporary "fix" to get full power assistance back by applying 12V direct to the Servotronic valve on the steering rack.
Ideally, you need a "spare" electrical connector to connect to an ignition controlled 12V supply. The spare connector is best as the connector pins on the servotronic valve are very thin & easily damaged.
An less desirable alternative is to cut off the existing connector from the loom & use that - being prepared to ssolder it back into the loom when you've solved your BCM problem.

You could also "tap" into the wiring loom at the servotronic valve end - BUT you need to be very confident you've got the positive and negative identified correctly or you might damage the BCM further.

12V applied to the servotronic valve creates max power assistance all the time the engine is running. Paul,

Thank you both you taking the time to reply. Both back doors are working at the moment. I might get another BCM off ebay & try, if it works I can get it coded later, is there anything to be aware of when purchasing another BCU?

It might be worth doing some of the simpler tests before buying a BCM - unless you've got access to a very cheap second hand version.
It's very easy to spend lots of money changing parts unnecessarily without a clear direction.
Simple testst should enable you to work out when you've got assistance or not relative to engine speed / vehicle speed etc Paul,

Hi Pawl, where is the steering transducer please?

Sorry I meant servotronic valve

The servotronic valve is on the steering column / drivers side of the steering rack - visible just through the wheel arch, easier with the height set to off-road or better still with the wheel & tyre off. Paul,

Thank you Pawl, I think I have seen that, I thought it was the angle sensor

Might wanna take it too the garage if your going to do the servotronic valve. See somewhere online apparently if you round the bolt or snap it off its a new steering rack jobbie
