Euro C**p Parts Strike Again- Alternator Issues

Well that’s was a fun day...
Despite the freezing temperatures I finally got round to starting the job I’ve been putting after my alternator decided to give up on living. I bought an alternator two weeks ago, taking the advice of the chap on the phone and opting for the cheaper RTX alternator ( I can hear you all sighing and shaking your heads already).

The old one took some time to remove, mainly because of the rear plug not wanting to leave the comfort it has known for 10 years in the back of the old alternator. After 5 hours (90 minutes of which was spent on the plug) it was out, to great relief.

Then the job began of putting the new one in. I put them both side by side and alarm bells began to ring as the terminals for the main cable were in different places. The best way to describe this is to say that the old Land Rover / Denso one has the terminal at 10 o’clock from the front of the car while the RTX is at about 7 o’clock.

As a result there was no point in going any further - there’s no way I can attach the cable with the 13mm nut and the different position prevents the new alternator from sliding into place so it looks like it’s going back and I shall go elsewhere.

God knows when I will get one but I’m going to go for the Denso I should have bought in the first place. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.... 2017 Jaguar F Pace 25t Portfolio - still part of the JLR family 😀

We all learn from euros the hard way mate. Only parts I ever buy is the stuff you can't balls up such as oil, filters etc.

Like you mine has given up so gonna remove that tomorrow so it's ready for the new one

Silly question in these modern times.......but.......is there an old fashioned 'leccy garage' that has things such as lathes, baker light switches with proper gauges, grubby boxes filled with parts that can rebuild your alternator?
We're very fortunate in this area to have such a chap, getting extinct nowadays with the 'throw away' society we have.

Mind you, you were correct..........I was sighing & shaking my head especially when ECP were mentioned Whistle 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Can't really go wrong at that price. I've taken a gamble on a £50 bosch one from gentleman of salvage. Always had decent stuff from them in the past so worth a try.

We have a place local that will rebuild your starter motor or alternator but to be honest I tend to rebuild them my self I have a guy on my saved sellers on the bay that pretty much supplies all the bits I need.

Recently did my starter motor hardest bit was getting it off then back on again.
