L405 Engine Failure

The last couple of months have been very stressful. With the possibility of a £16,000+ bill for a replacement engine and x2 turbos. Finally we have come to a resolution and tonight I drove the car home!

Stratstone finally agreed to allow me to contribute 1% totalling just over £150 which gives me a 24 month unlimited mileage warranty which is also transferable. An outcome I did not see happening yesterday let alone 2 months ago. Over the moon is an understatement. In the end Stratstone and JLR split the remaining bill 49/50.

As I have said through my updates Stratstone have been great since I lodged the complaint, it’s unfortunate a complaint had to go in before any progress was made however those in senior positions at Land Rover and Stratstone started putting things right as soon as they were involved, firstly by sorting me a courtesy car and the changing it something more suitable and finally with the outcome. I hope others in similar positions are treated this way and can resolve their issues the way this one has been.

I’d like to thank all of you that have contributed to the post with your experiences and information it really has helped me along the way. Now to hopefully many more months and years of worry free driving or the possibility to a change knowing the warranty can be moved along to the buyer for their peace of mind.

I must thank Ryan for his knowledge and input along the way, he has been extremely helpful.

Matt

Fantastic result Thumbs Up

Ryan has done as much as anyone to understand the issue - great that he was able to help

As always, it's a shame it takes this much effort for what is a known and well documented issue.

Good outcome - well done for negotiating that. Was the failure due to the dreaded Crankshaft failing with spun bearings ? 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

But, interestingly (he says politely), the (non LR affiliated) warranty company inspected it and concluded the failure was due to “wear and tear”.

Good to hear Matt that there is some decent dealers and some sensible people helping people with their hard earned spend!!

I sadly have not had a great experience for the last 12-18 months even with a LR warranty. I've been without my car for almost 6 months of the 12 and hopefully get it back this week from Monarch who have gone beyond what I would expect from a garage, its a shame a private garage can show up a main dealer so much sometimes, but I guess its just the way these days, but now I've got John to help with anything in the future it hopefully wont be so bad.

Glad to hear you got it sorted.

Merry Christmas to you all. all smug in my new plug!

Has anyone got any idea of the reason for this crankcase failure. Is it effected by a certain year of production or certain engine numbers? I know it’s not only limited to the 3.0 because I’ve read the v8 diesels being effected. Also most I’ve seen have gone at low mileage. Mines coming up to 78k ( 3.0 ) I’m now Censored myself! Although I love the car. I’m seriously thinking about moving it on.
I had a merc c63 a few years back. A very small handful of the early ones suffered from head bolt failure. And I mean a few. The effected ones ran up to a certain engine number before Mercedes apparently changed the design. But of cause this went global and to be honest, it was blown out of proportion. Is this the case with the L405? Or are people driving them around never checking oil levels and it’s due to oil starvation. Seems funny that I’ve seen some with 90k that are fine. I’d just like to know the cause of this.

AFAIK there's no predictable pattern. Ryan has done the most research on this forum - he has a thread dedicated to it -

Thanks Alistair. I’m now looking at chopping the 3.0 in for a 5.0 supercharged lol.
