Hi everyone,

I've looked through the owners manual and the service manuals but can't find the section that shows how to open the bonnet ("hood" for those of us across the Atlantic!) to the service position! There are a number of places that instruct you to do so but I can't find any section that actually tells how!

Is this one bit of important information hiding in plain sight or is this something that's just assumed everyone knows?

First of all, you need 2 folk.

Standing at either side , flat screwdriver , where the bonnet struts attach to the car, pry the small metal collars out from the base of the struts , keep your hand over them as they can easily ping away. Remove from mounting hole, leave hanging from bonnet. Do same other side.

Then push the bonnet vertical, and look at the hinge. There is a metal plate which you need to pull, and push into a receiving hole, it’s quite obvious when you see it. Do this both sides and it will keep the bonnet vertical.

DO NOT DO ON YOUR OWN, I DID, AND THE BONNET SHUT ON MY HAND FROM A GREAT HEIGHT. NOT PLEASANT.

I guess this confirms that it's not documented in the service manuals!

You can easily do it single handed if you have a suitable prop to hand ready to hold it vertical. I have used a brush in the past, but today just happened to have “Stan’s 4x2” to hand.

Don't attempt in a stiff breeze. Bonnet acts like a sail in the vertical position. Easy enough to do single handed, just have your wits about you! Previous cars:

I've always put the bonnet/hood into service position by myself too. Unclip one strut. With my hand supporting the front edge of the bonnet/hood, I walk around to the other side. Unclip that strut. Tilt bonnet/hood up into service position. Lock the tab. Now, even though there's only one side that's locked in place, the bonnet/hood is almost upright so there really isn't much of a moment/torque acting about that hinge. Just walk over to the first side again and lock that tab in place.

Of course, I only ever do this in my garage so I never have to worry about wind, which is definitely something to consider if doing this by yourself. 2010 RR SC
