Took the car in for it's annual service, and the dealer was very good, nice new Discovery as courtesy car. Picked car up, left it in the garage then went on a trip. Came back - Hmm, odd, a patch of oil on garage floor. Opened the bonnet, oil all over the engine, and a huge patch of oil under the bonnet! Oil staining right down to the sump area, undertray and even front suspension arms. Then I found the oil filler cap, sitting in the pipework on top of the engine. Clearly the service technician forgot to put it back on.

Angry call to dealer, and to be fair to them, they have replaced the under-bonnet soundproofing, cleaned the engine and made it all good again. A cautionary tale, but anyone can make a mistake, we've all made them.

I did it a while back with my M62-powered L322 - the filler cap is just above the timing chain which proceeds to throw outside the oil. It does make a mess! Ron B. VK2OTC

The technician presumably didn't follow the golden rule of checking for leaks with the engine idling after a filter change!

thing is i know a couple of mechanics that work at big dealers and they are put under lots of time pressure to carry out tasks so i guess an easy mistake. sounds like they took care of it well 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Similar thing happened to me, first service on a new Discovery 3 by a main dealer.

They had forgotten to tighten the oil filter housing which sits between the top of the banks on the TDV6, so oil went everywhere when they started it. At least that's what a mechanic later told me, for all I know they might have started it without the filter / housing even being in place!

Nothing was mentioned of this when I picked the car up, so I collected my car later that day blissfully unaware. Got home and parked up to later find a large pool of oil from the residual stuff dripping down the engine / engine bay.

I proper lost it when I got back to the dealers, the service manager really copped for it, as this wasn't the first time that dealer had caused me serious grief.
