Yes you can, you can remove the under tray and framework to hold it leaving just the sump to come off, then drain it out, refill, run to temp and top up, then go for a drive etc and drop the sump off next time.

There is a note to say that on these the initial temp should be up higher to open the thermostat, I didn't do that so only got 5 litres out. However in theory if you run it unto about 70 deg the stat should be open and you will get more oil out.

The problem is on a short drive you won't necessarily get the temp up enough to open the stat. so worth letting it get a bit hotter maybe and you may get more out the second time.

tbh, topping just 5 out has made a decent difference. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mine's double the mileage of yours so needs as much fluid changed as poss.

I'll do the 2 x 5 litre changes - ordered 10 litres and a sump. Geez the price has gone up since COB posted, his price was £130 for 10 litres, now £187. That's one hell of a price jump!

All in I think it's £235.

From reading people's reports on a machine flush, seems like that would be £400-£450. I'll be able to do at least one of the changes on a ramp so figured I'd make use of the ramp availability and go for it.

I've no overheat messages, but it's not silky coming on or off the throttle on a manually selected low gear.
I watched Edd China do the Boxster they bought for a grand with a dodgy tiptronic box and a fluid change was all it needed. So pretty sure changing fluid will bring back my ZF silk!

Just did the filter and oil change on mine this afternoon as it had started to feel just a little harsh. (90,000 miles). Very similar to when I did it on my BMW 740 with the ZF5 speed, you could feel the transmission just getting a little less silky.

Change done, no probs really used the ZF kit which I bought from buycarparts https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/zf-getriebe/8824048 takes about a week to get here as shipped from Germany.

Took out just over 3.5l, oil wasn't filthy but darkish and the sump/magnets had a small amount of sludge, nowhere near as bad as the 740 was though although that was done at 120000 miles.

I used one of the Lidl oil pumps to push the fluid in which made it real easy, no real issues apart from I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting more than 2l back in after starting, doing the shifts up and down box etc. Then remembered I needed to have the engine running to top up Big Cry

Once I did that got a total of about 3.75l back in.

Immediate difference in driving, the shifts are back to seamless and almost imperceptible even when using the paddles to manually shift down. You forget how smooth these boxes are until you do something like this Very Happy

Glad yours is back to silky MM. Thumbs Up

Mine - well I did three changes back to back (with drive and up to temp between) - hoped for silky but sadly no change to a bit of minor thunk when off and straight back on the throttle say second gear. Kick down is a bit thump too.

Higher gears, higher speed all pretty smooth.

Really not sure how to diagnose now.

I've since seen a 'service kit' for the 8HP70 which includes a few seals, o-rings etc. Maybe I should have done that... Or something to do with the mechatronic?

Any suggestions most welcome!

Changed the oil in my 8 speed box at 123k miles, here is what I found.

The oil appeared dark but still has a green colour and smell like oil, not burnt.

If you put it on a dipstick (now antique curiosity’s) it looks quite clean.

I decided that the oil was not too bad and I would not need a flush just a couple of changes.

Got 10L of lifeguard 8 from Oil Expert on ebay




Then used mm289’s link and got what appears to be a genuine ZF filter from Buycarparts.co.uk.

This is what the old oil pan and gearbox looked like. Very clean and only the usual metallic mush on the magnets but not much.











New pan fitted, easy job.

To fill with oil, I took M@ttsFF advice and got a new garden sprayer for £10 and modified the end with a small piece of copper pipe. Worked very well, did not spill a drop till it overflowed.





Did the run to temperature and fill to overflow.
I got 4 litres back in.
Ran it for a week then changed it again another 4 litres so 8 in total leaving 2 for future top up’s.
Here are samples of original oil, 1 change and 2 changes.

It does not drive any differently but I am sure it was correct before I started.

So did it need doing? Probably not but it does satisfy my OCD to have nice clean oil and filter.

There is one strange thing about this process. Every time I removed the heatshield I got soaked with water that has collected on top of it, probably about a cup full. It must be from the air con drain.
Is this normal? Or am I missing a part that diverts it away from the gearbox?

that's a good illustration of how clean you can get the oil after 2 changes.

pretty much removes the argument for flushing the box imho. the second change oil looks as close to the bottle as you could hope for Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Old thread i know. I recently purchased a 2012 TDV8 4.4 so the 8 speed box. 110k on the clock and no evidence of the box being serviced. so having been burnt on my 2004 TD6!! i am going to do the box.

my plan is purchase 10l oil and new filter
drain the oil and re-fill leaving the old filter in place
run the car down the road and back let cool
drop the oil again this time replace filter
refill and consider it serviced

this way i should get most of the old stuff out and save my self a few hundred quid by not having a full flush Thumbs Up

Did the same as you on both my TDV8 & SDV8 and was happy with both results Thumbs Up
