Clearly, as you know my other "handle" you also subscribe to the same CD/TV forum as myself & FWIW I cannot ride or even sit on a horse. Blowouts can happen with the very best tyres, although my experiences have shown that damage has occurred to the tyre such as a bolt, piece of metal rather than poor construction of the tyre itself. I've had two FNS blowouts on Fire Appliances at speed in excess of 70mph & brought to a halt safely - one a Dunlop & the other a Michelin. You don't get many vehicles maintained better than Fire Appliances. Fortunately, good quality tyres are even better than 10/20/30 & more years ago, coupled with the way many vehicles handle thesedays most of us are safer. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6 |

Well, looks like I'm in the minority, big time, on this one. Ces la vie. I'll live with that.

In 40 years of driving that’s only the second time I’ve suffered a flat on a motorway. The previous time was in the 80s when heading back from Poly in my overloaded Mini. Did that one myself, but it’s easier with a little car. On Friday I waited all of 20 minutes and was on my way in another 10 with a wheel properly torqued. I don’t think I could have done all that myself in the same time with the standard jack and wheel brace. Add in being on a hard shoulder of a busy motorway and it’s a no brainer.

Powered wheel brace? Why would you need that?

Even I will admit that the supplied Jack is known as The Widowmaker...... not uncommon for the threads to strip and the car to come back down.

Had similar in a Discovery - something punched a big round hole in the offside front tyre at about 100 on the M1; changing it with artics whistling past your head does focus the attention somewhat. |

I can carry out most jobs on most cars... But I'd also call out LR assist / AA / RAC in those circumstances.

I think LR addressed the issue and the 'newer' jacks have steel not nylon threaded sections. The earlier scissor jacks were downright dangerous and I have first hand knowledge of this. Must check the one on our 2011 FF. Without googling it, I'm sure there was a recall in the US and they all got supplied with a bottle jack or something like that? I had a "Bong" on the motorway down to Disneyland Paris just before the services loomed into view. I managed to have the old wheel off and the spare fitted in under 15 minutes. The wife and kids were really impressed. I was filthy and sweating like a Bison. Should have called International Rescue! |
