Changing a tyre on the motorway on the traffic side, nope I wouldn't risk it either.

I don't agree on the comments regarding the jack though. When following the instructions I find it amazingly good, stable and have changed all four wheels with it several times as it can really get the height required, unlike my standard 3-tonne trolley jack. Lol first time I did it I had to bang the wheel, as well as I, missed the trick to lever off a stuck wheel to those horrible hubs.

Not having the pulley system to lift out the wheel from the boot, seriously? It is just a wheel, even my 17-year-old daughter has taken them off and put them back on the car.

In 40 years of driving that’s only the second time I’ve suffered a flat on a motorway. The previous time was in the 80s when heading back from Poly in my overloaded Mini. Did that one myself, but it’s easier with a little car. On Friday I waited all of 20 minutes and was on my way in another 10 with a wheel properly torqued. I don’t think I could have done all that myself in the same time with the standard jack and wheel brace. Add in being on a hard shoulder of a busy motorway and it’s a no brainer.

I don’t doubt you would have done it yourself and no doubt you carry a decent jack and powered wheel brace to assist you. I don’t.

Powered wheel brace? Why would you need that?

I get the safety element, just don’t get the comments about the jack, used it plenty of times even on uneven ground, and now the need for a powered wheel brace? I just stand on my supplied one That will loosen those nuts. Jack it up, then use the wheel brace to lever the wheel from the hub as it always seems to get stuck. Place it underneath the vehicle and pop the other one on. Take minutes.

Even I will admit that the supplied Jack is known as The Widowmaker...... not uncommon for the threads to strip and the car to come back down.

Had similar in a Discovery - something punched a big round hole in the offside front tyre at about 100 on the M1; changing it with artics whistling past your head does focus the attention somewhat.

I can carry out most jobs on most cars... But I'd also call out LR assist / AA / RAC in those circumstances.

If had an offside puncture on the motorway and the tyre wasn't de-laminating, I'd likely drive slowly down the hard shoulder to a safer spot (refuge, exit, or a least a left hand curve - right handers are were peeps get wiped out by inattentive drivers in the UK).

The one time I used a LR scissor jack on the roadside was on our 2009 Disco 3. It was the first time it had *ever* been used and it stripped the pathetic nylon threads as I jacked the car up. Good job the wheel wasn't off as the car came down with a thump.

LR assist all the way - if you have it, use it!

I had a "Bong" on the motorway down to Disneyland Paris just before the services loomed into view. I managed to have the old wheel off and the spare fitted in under 15 minutes. The wife and kids were really impressed. I was filthy and sweating like a Bison. Should have called International Rescue!

I must avail myself of today's vernacular ! When I was a boy , the 'F' is both these acronyms meant F""K, which was a profanity unless hell is definitely in the handcart
