About the non-existing gauge in the drain tube TDV8 4.4

Hi all,
Been puzzled by this tiny hose neaby the filler hole for oil in TDV8 4.4 (where the silicon hose is connected).
Asked my mechanics that to me it might be used with a specific workshop gauge.
Specific because of its small diameter that will not allow to use a standard dipstick.

Now comes my question: what about using avec a copper wire as it is rigid enough and small enough in diameter to dip it inside and so, allowing to have both cold or hot oil level?
Starting by a hot level checked using the dashboard reading, then dipping the improvised tool and make a mark, then when engine will be cold, making annother dipping and marking for cold level.

Wasn't able to find any clue for this even checking in BMW M67 or Ford's engine infos.

Any ideas?

I know there is a tube you can connect a suction pump to, in order to get the oil out from above, but I think that has a long steel tube on it.

Sounds good in theory.

Yes, in theory but... Practically I don't know.
Maybe the most simple thing would be just give it a try.

The pipe is the suction one for removing the engine oil when servicing. Connect a suction unit with a suitably sized receiver and away you go. There is a drain plug is under the car on the sump and will then only have a small amount remaining when you take it out.

It's no use as a dipstick pipe, that's taken care of by the TFT screen. See the handbook for details of checking the oil level.

PS there should be a cap on the pipe, black, twist and pull off, and not left with a plastic hose attached.

Pic in this thread.

HTH.

edit

You can check the oil level with the car cold and the method is on here somewhere. It involves having bonnet open and using the screen to access the menu for oil level.

Thanks for your reply rjff, I know about the suction/bolt under the car/dashboard screen.
But, I consider this hot oil/park flat/cut engine/wait 10 minutes (or open the bonnet and press twice on the cancel speed regulator button as waste of time and too complicated compared to a simple metal gauge old style lol.
So, precisely because this hose goes down to the bottom of the sump, why not using it to make an oil check, this was my question.

Couldn't agree more on checking the oil AxxA, a real PITA.

If your idea of a marked rod works I'm sure it will be appreciated here, so it would be great if you posted up the result Thumbs Up Cheers

I'm sure some one on here made a gauge out of some wire.
I wonder of a brazing rod would fit down neatly

In fact, if if if... if I can have a constant measure:
- mark of the "wire/rod" at the entry of the oil tube when fully inserted (or not, need a diagram of the oil pan to be sure)
- heat the FF, check with dashboard
- plunge the "tester" and mark the hot level (and measure, in case the mark might disapear or be wrong)
- let the FF go completely cold and make a second mark + measure

Redo the process to ensure repeatability.

Then, ideally, make a final dipstick using the black cylindrical cap that closes the oil hose, I mean there is a hole inside it, if the dipstick that I'll marked could fit in, well, this will make a decent DIY permanent dipstick that of course can remain in place all the time.

I am dreaming of a standard dipstick for the TDV8, allowing to make reliable cold oil checks.

Is there a way to get the Oil Level on the TFT when the engine is warm / up to temperature. I only get the Oil Level when the engine is cold, won't show a level on the service menu once you have started the car and run the engine.

Noted in a post above something about opening the bonnet and pressing buttons on the wheel. What do you do exactly and will this be the same for a MY12 Model 4.4 TDV8?

Cheers for any pointers! Bow down Bow down Thumbs Up

So, read when cold or
Read 20min after shut down of a hot engine.
Simples.
You can over ride Unavailable messages any time with bonnet open and press cruise cancel twice when the message pops up saying unavailable but readings won’t be as accurate naturally.
