ctek charger

I already have a charger, albeit only a 3.8v. its perminately connected to the toy in the garage atm.
My question, would it be much use if i connected it to the FF, or would i benefit from a more powerful model, that will be connected via the towing electrics, specially as winter is coming and the wife will probably use the pre heat

I’m sure that if the battery isn’t flat, that will be fine to keep it topped up and maintained.

Obviously it will take longer to build it back up from a low charge.

I have had a CTEK 7 for many years and had no issues on my 4.4TDV8 if you want something bigger.

I have the mxs 10 as it also has the Supply Mode feature to allow a clean 12V for powering the car when doing diagnostics etc.
It also charges quickly Rolling with laughter Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Re: ctek charger

As a rule of thumb, if the battery is 12v (which I believe they all are), then the only difference will be in the time it takes to charge the battery, it will still charge.

There can be differences across battery chemistries, for example a lead acid battery needs different charging routines than a lithium ion or other type of battery - but again, the RR only has lead acid (SLA and AGM variants, I believe).

I'm curious about the idea of charging via the towing electrics, that sounds very convenient and something I should look into as I suspect I'm going to suffer from flat batteries quite often (working from home etc!)

I have the CTEK 5.0 and connectors on all the cars so that I can plug them in and keep them topped up. Having the connector hard wired to the battery means that even if they are outside, I can hide the mains plug and unit under the bonnet, out of the weather. Rob 05 L322 4.2SC

Interesting point about the pre-heat - can it be used with a battery conditioner attached? Or does that depend on the conditioner?

I’ve had no issues charging mine from the towing electrics. It has also been fine when it’s been connected and I’ve used the fuel burning heater.

The only thing I read, was that maybe the actual battery voltage might be slightly higher than it detects, due to the loss in the wiring.... which may cause it to charge a bit longer than needed. No idea if that’s really an issue though.

Good to know - thank you.

I might run a line out to mine via some conduit from the garage to connect to the towbar electrics just in case.

Thanks for this, hadn't thought of that but yeah, it's definitely possible. I'd hope the difference would be so small as to not affect the charging, but it probably depends on the gauge of the cable used - I can't imagine it would be an issue.

Easy to check with a DMM, check the voltage at the battery and compare to that at the towbar! Smile

The ctek looks handy as it also has a 10amp power supply, which would make it useful when camping as I could run my little electric coolbox off the mains hook-up, so that's another little bonus Smile
