There's a TSB on the in tank pump and connectors doing this. Could be your problem, as could the pump falling about in the tank.

Thanks for the help. I dove into the tank and ended up replacing the first black plug which did the trick. Didn't fancy taking the whole pump assembly out as I'm just a humble home mechanic. Great tip about the carpet but I found it easier, less fiddly without the marigolds.

I did but trying to hold on to the tiny wire with slippery marigolds was impossible. It’s ok, I rinsed them off before dinner. |
