United Kingdom 2014 Range Rover Vogue TDV6 Fuji White
L405 Rear Shock absorber

Morning all,

I’m after some mechanical advise by anyone who may have had a similar problem or even better anyone who may have attempted to repair a knackered shock.

On the way back from work yesterday the drivers side rear started to skip a little over any bumps or pot holes so I jumped out to have a look and there was a heavy leak from that area. I knew something had gone with the suspension and it was must likely the shock absorber due to the effect it was having on the way the car was driving.

I’m gonna take a guess that it isn’t covered under warranty and will be down to wear and tear, my question is has anyone changed this part before, if so is it very difficult and will I need any particular ‘special’ tools and will I need to do both sides on the rear?

I have some experience with working on my own cars and the old man was previously a mechanic some time back, so hopefully we will manage, I just wanted to check there wouldn’t be any nasty surprises half way through. If not I’ll be taking it to the local specialist.

Thanks for your time and sorry for the long post this Tuesday morning Laughing

The shock has either a badly leaking seal or the reservoir attached near the bottom has come adrift. Either way its a mechanical failure so no real need to replace both sides although you may find a new one firmer than the other side so end-up replacing both.
No diagnostic tool is required, its purely a mechanical task to R&R.

As said above its really quite straight forward sir... That all said, i think its worth checking with your warranty co as its a mechanical failure rather than wear & tear... And they are VERY expensive shockers!

How many miles has your car done? Many more than 40k and id seriously consider doing both sides sir... Thumbs Up

If its a used car JLR Warranty then its probably only covered under MOT insurance [if its included] so I'd get it into them and have them fail it as part of the MOT and then it will get done under the warranty. all smug in my new plug!

Rear seats out, excellent design Laughing

Had one in recently with 35k miles on it, rear subframe dropped to do ARC pipes. One shock was leaking, the other had absolutely no damping at all

2 new shocks, and the owner said it transformed the car Thumbs Up

Any chance you can share how to change the rear shocks on the L405? How to remove the rear seats etc. Would be useful. I'm about to take mine off and it would be good to know how you remove them from the car (the bottom is straght forward) but how do you access the top mounting bolts?

Do you have any drawings at all that you could maybe share?

Many thanks
