I'm in the early stages of research and preliminary viewings of L322 4.4 TDV8s. When and if i eventually find a decent specimen, is an AA inspection worth the money? I'm thinking an independent specialist would have a more in depth knowledge - does anyone know of such a service in the Southampton - Portsmouth - Chichester area?
Having moved on from the world of TVR, I'm expecting a similar 'pain and pleasure' ownership experience!

There are a few specialists around the area you quoted. Keith Gott, AJ LandRover, Mark West etc.
Personally, I’d use the search function on here and find the common issues with the model you have in mind.

4.4 are robust but can have their issues. Engine oil leaks, smoky exhausts.

Using google I would source a local RR specialist and call them to agree approach. When I distance bought mine I agreed a verbal report following a one hour test drive/ramps inspection for the cost of one hour of labour. A bargain.

I too are on the search for a good 2011/12 l322 while I feel independent inspections are a worth while investment ideally if I was to use one I would also want one who has software that can ready the Ecu's.
Also it would be ideal for you to do as much research as you possibly can and familiarise your self with the model you wish to purchase.

Agreed. In my case as part of the inspection they used the code reader to check/clear all codes, then took it for a good run and checked again for what came up.

Apologies for the radio silence - emergency appendectomy delayed my research somewhat! At least Covid ensured that A&E was deserted! Thanks for the replies, I'm now back in action and hopefully viewing a 4.4tdv8 later this week. 81,000m - a risky mileage from what I have read?

Starters and alternators seem to go around 80k miles

Bought mine with 86k i wouldn't be too worried about the milage check the history and have a good inspection, check for plumes of smoke when giving it some to the red line.

I bought mine needing work it had main dealer service history to 60k I checked the filters and they were clean so obviously had a service after that too.

Main work I had to do was
New front suspension arms
Outer cv boot
Misting rear shocks
Leak from the oil cooler
Aux belt tensioner
They were the main items

I managed to get 2k off the price and have bought 1.6k worth of parts to run through the whole system auto box , diff oils etc, new reflectors new rear brake light just to make sure every thing is 100% so for less than the asking price I've managed to refresh most major items and give it a second lease of life.

If you cannot do the work your self ide budget 3k in total most people only sell cars when they need work even with full history so find the best you can and then make sure it gets a good service and going through.

It does amaze me people worrie above 100k on these engines, they should be able to do super miles with such a lazy big capacity engine.
I've always had volvos T5R's and s60R's turbos last at least 200k and the engines looked after will do 300k with no major issues.

Change the oil regularly I do it every 6k or every year oil is cheap and easy to change.
Don't thrash it when cold or coming to the end of a journey also leave the engine to idle a few seconds before turning off.

Unusual to see a main dealer with an L322 - I thought 5 years was normally their age limit?

This is similar to my 2012 4.4 TDV8 below
They'll have taken that as a trade-in. JLR are desperate to sell new cars so probably relaxed their guidelines.
See if you can negotiate a nice long warranty on it ? try 3 years? you might get 2? I would offer them £18k with a 3 year warranty.... see what they say.

It looks pristine. I expect some folk will say it's a bit expensive but coming from a Main Dealer is a huge bonus and saves you the hassle of learning what to look for. Also if there are fit for purpose problems they will just take it back... Buy it!.....

The only think I would suggest that might be a surprise is what kind of driving you are doing. 4.4 TDV8s are not for city driving - if you are Southampton - Portsmouth - Chichester as you mentioned should be ok, but the DPF can fill up if you are stop start short hops or in traffic... it needs to be doing a bit of a run .... good luck!
