Viscous fan removal TD6

Quick question.

I have the correct spanner size 36mm and a long bar to hit it to shock the nut off.

It undoes in a clockwise direction yes? ie Left hand thread.

Im hitting this thing and its not budging. Big Cry

If it's the same as the BMW 4.4 V8 , if you are relying on the belt tension to stop the pulley moving , it will likely slip. You need a second bar to hold the pulley in place.

Should have said its a td6 but your right the pully moved slowly, and i have heard that you can shock the nut loose

Same thing happened with mine, spent ages trying to shock it hoping the belt would hold it just enough. Had to buy a cheap 2 bar kit from eBay to hold the pulley. If you have a bit of flat bar and and drill a couple of holes you can achieve the same thing.

Makes sense, I've stopped for the day until another fan spanner arrives tomorrow. Beer o clock now!

Out of interest what are the couple of holes for? is it not just to hold the inner nut from moving or is there an easier location to stop it moving?

Thanks for your help

Chris

You really need to buy another thin spanner that goes onto a "nut" behind the viscous pulley with the arm resting on the top of the crankshaft vibration damper. One tap will shift it then.
If you need to know which spanner you need let me know and I will try and find the details. Thumbs Up

Thanks be good to know of the correct tool.

I have another 36mm spanner coming tomorrow and may get the welder out to fab something up.

As I'm driving myself mad it is clockwise to undo a left handed thread! lol stupid i know but i always find myself wondering if I'm tightening it!

Basically a flat bit of bar with two holes. They slot over two of the four bolts on the pulley and stop it slipping as you use the 32mm spanner on the viscous nut.

Can I just say you don't need to disconnect any water hoses on the TD 6 to undo the viscous fan.
If you lock the spanner above onto the shaft nut and move it round to rest on the vibration damper then put your viscous fan spanner on at about the 10 past two position.
To then hit the end of the spanner you then need a bit of pipe or wood about 400mm long.
Hold the pipe or wood vertically one end on the end of the fan spanner and hit the top end of the pipe/wood with a decent sized hammer.
I suggest then undoing each of the clips holding the fan cowl in place, spin the viscous fan off the shaft and carefully remove the fan and cowl in one go.

Note: TD6 only - cool running engine!

And once you have removed it, consider not putting it back on. You don't need it, engine/cooling will be fine without it. Many owners have done this, I ran for four years without it. Great for access to the bits at the front of the engine. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink
