Thinking of buying a runaround to leave in France , so SWMBO has some independence .

Probable Car cost less than a 1,000 euro : One careful old lady driver!!!!

Is car insurance straightforward? Can I get third party insurance ? Guesstimates for cost. Garaged/remote.

Unlike the UK you'll hardly find a reliable car in France for 1000 euros - even if it has a Controle Technique.
1500 to 2000 is the bare minimum.

Insurance: ask them if they'll take your UK NCB ('Bonus' in French) into account otherwise you'll start as a new driver and have to pay 200% of the premium. Not cool.

yes 3rd party are called "courtier" in france, you could google "courtier en assurance auto" to find a couple

As above, you could, as suggested, talk to your bank or other insurance providers such as AXA or Groupama. There are others.

As J. says, check on your no claims discount transferrability.

If you are looking for a French registered LHD then, as said, they will be more expensive.

If looking for a French registered vehicle, one thing to beware of is that on a number of English speaking forums you will get adverts stating that the vehicle has a CT (Controle Technique - MoT equivalent). Often what they have isn't sufficient as to transfer registration in France the CT must not be more than six months old.

You won't have to provide proof of CT for insurance.

If you are looking at a UK registered vehicle then, to conform strictly to the law, it must have MoT and Tax as well as insurance.

Having said that, there are many who "fly under the radar" in that respect. Next year may find a lot out and there may be other complications with UK vehicles, Who knows?

Be sure what you want in regards to insurnce before signing up as, unlike in the UK, the insurance is contracted for a year and you cannot cancel it or change to another company during the contract period unless you sell or scrap it. John

For what it's worth: do not buy and pay your insurance through a comparision site as lynx etc. Go directly to the site of the company. Comparision sites are invaded by youngsters that sell your creditcard number and code. Take care. It's not only my experience but a few friends had the same experience. My card was used in Mexico and in Panama the day after I bought my insurance through lynx...my bank rep. new I was here in France and blocked my card immediatly....

the car insurance comparison sites in the UK transfer you to the insurance provider so no probs like that here.... ... - .- -.

I think you’ll find they have changed the laws, regarding switching insurance companies.
You can now change insurers at any time during the 12 month period, and get reimbursed the money.
We did, no problem, the excess over here is huge, with BNP it was over 2000! It’s now at 1200.
You get a lot more though, including breakdown/accident cover
