Good 4.4 fuel economy

My L405 4.4 is back in to try and sort the small water leak (approx 1-2 litres per month). Had oil cooler gasket then a new oil cooler now something else in the V is leaking. It will get sorted I’m sure.

My point of posting is that I’ve been given a Discovery Sport D180 as a loan car. Now I know it’s no FF but it only does 29.4mpg on my daily commute my AB 4.4 does 28.2 mpg. I do 16 miles each way with approx 11 miles of dual carriageway and rest city driving I know which car I would rather be in Very Happy Very Happy , makes a mockery of the current taxation levels on cars. Sad

Hmmm, yes and no! The MPG is irrelevant in terms of tax... The stuff it chucks out of the rear is the relevant part! If It takes 1/4 or even 1/2 of the MPG to bring down the bad exhaust gases, then its doing its job...

A quick example for you... A 2010 Fiat 500 1.2 petrol = 69BHP & 111 g/km

A 2000 Fiat Punto with the same 1.2 petrol engine is 60BHP & 136 g/km

So, Fiat have developed the engine and its taken a further 14% power increase to power the emission controls, lowering the g/km by 19%... Same 1.2 engine but the older it gets the more power Fiat have to gain just to power the emission control systems as they get ever tighter each year... Thumbs Up

It was more tongue in cheek quote about the taxation. Very Happy

You make good points about emissions but that is assuming that the tests are accurate and reflect true on the road driving and we all know how’s that’s gone in the past. I’ve had numerous new cars when I had company cars and none came close to meeting the stated MPG so one would assume the g/km would be out as well. To me it was a surprise that the mpg was so close considering the two sizes of vehicles, just glad I went with the old 4.4 Very Happy

Still feel the taxation is wrong Very Happy my Westfield weekend toy costs over £250, my classic Jag is zero. It makes no sense it should all be in with the fuel costs Very Happy Very Happy
