Diesel: Shell V Power or Supermarkets own?

Hey guys,

Has anyone had experience with running only Shell V Power in their car and did it make a significant improvement given the increase cost compared to supermarkets own diesel?

I use Asda fuel in my car and periodically use a fuel additive cleaner, but I am thinking should we protect our FFRR investment by using a premium fuel?

Many years ago a colleague & I bought new identical Mercedes Vito Vans.

@ 250k mine was still on it's original injectors & fuel pump, his was on it's third set of injectors & a fuel pump.

Guess who ran on Shell V-Power/BP Ultimate & who ran on Supermarket Finest ?

Not wanting to get too involved with this subject as I know it’s something people have strong opinions on.... for me, it depends on the car. When my wife had a Boxster, we ran it exclusively on Shells finest (whatever it was called at the time), the new Golf R that replaced it also asks for higher octane petrol but that’s about 50/50 on Shell and Tesco 99 depending on which is the most convenient at time. It was the same for my 750i, even though surprisingly normal 95 was supposed to be Ok. Rightly or wrongly, I’m less bothered about diesel, so will probably get most of it from Tesco as I driver past one regularly.

No idea whether this is 100% correct or not but I can believe it for the base/std fuels. Taken from the petrolprices blog on the subject:

“I am a tesco fuel tanker driver and we deliver DieselRE (Diesel with retail additive) EXACTLY the same as BP, Shell etc. There is absolutely no difference, it comes from the same terminal, the same tank and through the same arm as everyone else. In certain instances the fuel could be split between say a BP garage and a supermarket garage and there is no difference whatsoever. No one has a branded product anymore when it comes to the base fuels as none of the oil companies refine their own fuels any longer” MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

The base fuel is exactly the same and you can see differently branded tankers lined up at refineries.

The difference comes in the additives that are added to the tankers. I understand that all retailers use additives but the additives vary by retailer and the likes of Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate includes additives that are different to those used by supermarkets. Whether that makes any difference in real terms is not easy to know but I paid so much for my car that if V-Power helps me sleep at night I'm happy to keep buying it.

V Power is different and well worth using on a decent petrol engine in my opinion/experience. It’s not fair to directly compare that to a basic supermarket fuel, it’s like comparing apples with....errrr, spiced apples?!

Not so sure whether basic petrol/diesels is different.

One of our divisions has a large tanker fleet and does a lot of fuel deliveries, I might try and find out about the additives in tankers to see if that’s the case with the basic fuels. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

Those who use premium fuels will always try to justify their expenditure.

Those who don’t will always tell you it’s snake oil.

Both sides will point to various evidence.

You will not reach a universal conclusion, so pick a side and stick with it.

I’m a bit random and generally go wherever is easiest.

Final point.....I’m happy to pay more if I think there’s a benefit, fuel cost isn’t my main concern, even with two cars that cover 40-45k a year between them it pales into insignificance compared to depreciation!! But I still want value for money. I bought a 4.4 litre petrol V8 with the plan to do 30k miles a year and always ran it on the good stuff even though the handbook said 95 was OK and I don’t keep my cars longer than 3 years. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

I have run high miles on Mercedes Sprinter (375,000), Ford Transit (250,000), Audi Allroad (275,000), For Galaxy (190,000), VW Touareg (175,000) all of them run on Morrisons Diesel, none of them had a single issue with injectors, fuel pumps etc, none of them had engine issues of any sort.

Have look here, there is a minimal power increase between the best and the worst but thats it, if you want to pay the premium for snake oil, fill yer boots.

Loving Brian’s can-o-worms image!

In my last oil burner, I switched from premium fuel to standard fuel and started using an Archoil additive. I perceived a positive difference. It’s not particularly convenient, but if you want to give your car “a treat” Whistle then I’d suggest the additive route vs the premium fuel route, not for cost reasons (I never worked it out) but for qualityreasons.
