its a 16litre pushrod engine with a single turbo, round the back, if i remember correctly they have a mini head for each cylinder, currently rated at between 520bhp and 730bhp. They're nice and smooth and will pull without juddering and shaking from like 700rpm, unlike a 6 cylinder. I had a 57 plate Scania v8, it was only a 500bhp unit but it was ace, but it was ace because it had been fitted with a switchover valve so you could run it with 2 straight piped tracks up the back of the cab, it also got sent in for limiter calibration on bald tyres meaning it was 3 or 4 mph faster than the 56mph lorries, and the closing speed on the supermaket lorries was that of a car doing the speed limit and me, so you had the smug feeling of being able to come over beattock southbound in top gear at 1250rpm with the all the V8 noise in the world, at 44 tonnes (and whatever else the farmer loaded on you), feeling like the fastest lorry in the world. That was my memory of Scania v8's. However, you cant really get away with that as much now, and the 500bhp scanias are now a straight 6. The last 490bhp I6 scania i had was ace. Most of the "proper" diesel engines that work for a living are straight 6's. I'd be alright with an inline 6, providing they keep the volume down. At least they don't sound as awful as a 4 cylinder. when i was a young backpacker in aus, my boss had a mack superliner, something worth seaching on youtube, big diesel v8 with an air starter, ace thing.

It would be a squeeze TBH, in marine spec I hink they were around 1500bhp, 480 in a truck |

All this makes me feel old. Come to think about, I am. My experience was with Atkinsons with Gardner 150 engines which were also fitted in the BRS trucks. You could go walkabout in tbe BRS cab it was so big. John

Always had petrol except the 4.4 TDV8RR and the Hilux TBH will go back to petrol again if I can. Pity they don't do the 3 litre engine you can get in Aus for the Hilux. Don't know the stats but environmentally suspect the petrol is better |

My Dad’s fleet manager used to buy Guy trucks for two reasons; they were a Black Country firm, so buying local, but mainly because of the Gardner engine. Apparently it was bomb proof for the heavy haul multi drop work the trucks did - delivering steel tube and fittings. When Guys were no longer made they moved on to Leyland Lynxs or Clydesdales. Neither were a patch on the Guys. |
