DPF failure to regenerate - AGAIN!! (AND AGAIN!! UPDATE)

Thought I'd start a new thread on this old topic!!

Car was DPF force regenerated and new inlet manifold at 100,000 miles. Has worked fine since then, regened fine etc. Now on 101400 miles. Has done a couple of trips a week (12 miles) on motorway/dual carriageway. just had an amber DPF light on and Iid showed level of 23.8g.

Had two trips on motorway today to regenerate: neither worked. What is interesting though is the number of demanded regens - over 5,000 regeneration demands in a day!! I could actually see the figures go up in leaps of 30-40. Attempted a regeneration on motorway tonight and the exhaust temp got to 575 degrees before peaking and then lowering - no regeneration completed.

The car is obviously trying to regeneration but it won't allow it for some reason. Software update required?

Thoughts? Here are the figures/IID screen shots from this morning.

Have you checked (again) the usual inlet suspects? The throttle body seems to be emerging as another one. I'm told by an ex LR mechanic that the seal and spring wear with age. There's a couple of threads on it as you probably know. Perhaps look at it for soot, looseness and fit? Perhaps try the PTFE trick?

Might be worth another high pressure smoke test too Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Shame your issues have returned Dolphin

I bought a DPF Dongle and it's been a lot easier to manage regenerations.

http://www.diagnostic-associates.co.uk/dow...0DPFDR.pdf

Apparently (unofficially) JLR use these because new cars can idle too long, on and off transporters etc.

But if you have had a sudden soot increase you may have a new leak somewhere else.
So I agree with what DrRob says. The seal (intercooler to throttle body pipe) is suspect. Clip too.

Also check and clean your MAP and MAF sensors

Also the CSOV valve.

Don't forget your fuel level must be more than 25% - and use cruise control too.
The ECU is very fickle about parameters and if it's not completely happy it will stop the regeneration.

That's where the DA Dongle helps, fuel aside once you force it to regenerate it will regenerate, even if you slow right down which happened to me when I hit traffic once.

Take off the throttle body plastic pipe and see if its oily and sooty underneath on the OUTSIDE of it. Or get a white tissue and wipe underneath it in situ as a first test Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Hi chaps, thanks yes will do all those things you suggest.

However it’s not a sudden rise in soot that’s the problem - it’s the fact that the car is attempting to actively regen but something is not allowing it to. The soot levels were being lowered normally up to now. I even gave up monitoring them on the IID as everything’s was as it should be.

That’s why I was thinking it may be software - the evoque and disco sport forums are full of this dpf and oil dilution problem and some had a software update to help.

Right, haven't had a chance to get a clear look under the bonnet due to weather (torrential) and time (scarce).

However have had a chance to look for other causes and I have come to the conclusion that it is not regenning because the exhaust temps are not getting high enough. Causes could be:

1. Faulty EGR valve (stuck/remining open?)
2. Throttle body not closing to minimise air intake onto cylinders. Poss wear of clip and spring?
3. Faulty sensor (replace only 2 months ago so not likely to be a cause)

Anyone any other comments or mechanical knowledge? I have seen a few comments that the EGR won't affect the DPF?

Thx all
DB

Hi DB.

Right. Fresh set of eyes on this.
My immediate concern would not be the traditional and well-known solutions to the DPF soot-fill problem but the astonishing amount of Demanded Regenerations you have been experiencing. We know the "Regens Demanded" number and function to be usually robust, reliable and work universally - but we have not seen this frequency of Demanded Regens before in any scenario.

That should be your starting point, and I think you need a specialist to take a look at it because it sounds electronic.

Incidentally, I might be wrong but if memory serves me correctly, I dont think the fields "Incomplete Regens" or "Successful Regens" populate correctly. I'm fairly certain I discarded them early.

All the best,

.

@RRL322, I think you may be right. It was trying to regen but was being hindered. It may be an EGR temp sensor fault not allowing the exhaust to get hot enough to regenerate.

The 5,000 attempted regens should ring alarm bells at the LR dealer so will see what they say. Will update when I can.

Thanks all.

rob, Sensor was changed 1000 miles ago (if you mean the rear DPF sensor). Or do you mean the EGR temp sensor?

Main dealer can't get me in for a month!! Evil or Very Mad They are open for business but most of the staff (including the Chief Technician) are furloughed! How can that be possible?

Anyhow, going to let someone (non-LR) look at it who seems quite knowledgable about DPFs and LR mechanics in general

The fact that I don't have any fault codes leads me to think it's not a mechanical failure (EGR etc).
