I beg to disagree.
This has nothing to do with quality, but all about cost.
We now live in a consumeralist world where cost is GOD!
We don't give a Censored where it's come from, as long as it's cheap, regardless of whether it's 'genuine' or 'OEM'l
Picture this... Would you buy a 'genuine' Landrover part from the UK if it cost £50.00 or a 'genuine' Landrover part from China / India / Brazil / Ghana / Spain / or wherever... if it only cost £35.00
OF COURSE NOT!!!
So...how do we redress this?
Answers on a postcard, please.

Why do we need to redress anything ?

I will pay for quality - but if there are 2 products that are of the same quality and different prices then clearly I'll buy the cheaper one.

Where something is made is irrelevant to me - so you buy a filter 'made in the UK' - but where do the raw materials come from ?

If a product works out cheaper by locating the fabrication closer to the raw materials & where there are lower labour costs, then shipping the finished product, then that's OK with me.

Some things are more nuanced, where style or a perception of quality matters and you may pay for that - but for many things, it's more of a standard - if it's up to standard then it's fine - buy cheapest and move on.

I suppose you could agrue that there are no genuine Land Rover parts as Land Rover don't actually make any. They outsource parts manufacturer to a number of different companies who produce these parts to an agreed spec and standard. So if you go to your local Land Rover dealer and buy a set of discs or pads they are not made by Land Rover but by a third party, what you are paying for is a Land Rover logo on the part and a sticker on the outside of the box. Some years ago I had a Porsche and it needed some rear arms, I had a choice of either buying genuine Porsche parts or third party TRW parts. My indy showed me the difference between the two which turned out to be the letter P ground off the TRW part. Turns out that TRW made the parts for Porsche, same spec, same quality but much cheaper in price. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

Speak for yourself, not me thank you very much.

If I have the choice of an item at say £35 or a better quality one at £50 then I go for the latter.
The problem often is trying to identify the quality.

My "sad" hobby is model railways - most of the locomotives, rolling stock, track ect is produced/made in Europe (albeit with some far eastern components). The quality is there because the quality control is in Europe. My friends who buy Chinese models suffer all sorts of issues such as paint falling off, metal chassis crumbling, plastic mouldings distorting, rough running & so on. Having said that, the electronics side is good.

Some of the German model makers returned to European production after brief flirts with Chinese manufacturing.

So, you can keep your cheapness - I'll continue to pay a bit more & buy quality. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

I’m unsure if some of this thread is aimed at me and my recent reticent to use “some” Chinese “crap” parts?

Let me explain two lines of thought... My company will only use Gen JLR parts for a couple of reasons... For example purposes only...

1, TRW produce rear brake pads for both JLR & the OEM resellers for the 405, fact... Order a set of TRW rear brake pads for a 405 and place them side by side & “usually” the JLR product has less chamfered edges, a better quality paint/powder coated metal base and in most cases are 1 or 2mm thicker! So, this means when you buy the TRW pad, the brake material it considerably less & cheaper to produce, the finishing materials on the metal base are poorer quality, again cheaper to produce and therefore need the conscientious installer to file/grind these areas to fit as well as the JLR product... (if NOT done, these may get stuck, overheat your brakes and be the cause of a catastrophic failure?)

2, if you as a JLR customer have an issue With any failed part “let’s say a battery” as they fail a lot!!! And you as my customer live 200miles away, can take your vehicle to any JLR main agent and as long as My/Our paperwork is supplied to that JLR main dealer (usually by email) then your battery will be changed at no cost to you! Parts & labour included...

This is just a part of why JLR parts cost more than the OEM route...

Now, if those same parts are produced in the UK, China, Vietnam or flipping Timbuktu! I couldn’t care less and here’s why... For a company to produce parts for JLR, they have to meet JLR’s standards! They are visited by QC’s from JLR and tested to destruction etc etc etc... In some examples those same companies albeit in the UK, China or Timbuktu produce their own products to sell (and please remember, these parts now need to be competitively priced against all other “non OE parts”) it’s those products that MAY! Or MAYNOT be MUCH less quality and therefore fall into the bracket of “some Chinese Crap parts”

Then you have the resale value of your car to take into consideration... Whistle

Why do any of us buy “Branded tyres” when the likes of some of the “non Branded” tyre producers do so by buying the “old 2018 style tread pattern” from those very same “Branded” tyre producers... They can then sell these tyres without the R&D costs associated with producing “Branded tyres”... Food for thought no? Yet I always buy Conti’s/Pirelli’s and would shy away from buying a FF with cheaper tyres fitted! Does that show, corners have been cut in its maintenance???

Anyway, that’s my opinion for what it’s worth... Make of it what you will... “Im now off to my local AC specialists to fill my AC with some gas produced where???” Answers on a postcard please Whistle Laughing Thumbs Up

From a few years ago, I understood that, as Craig says, OE is not necessarily to JLR standard, probably having less stringent build tolerances etc. They are likely to be preferable to the more generic copy parts that are available..... each being priced accordingly.

You pays your money and you makes your choice...and all that.

Certainly nothing in my post is aimed at you Craig, or anyone else for that matter. There are some appaling aftermarket products out there made with barely any consideration for quality (LED Bulbs spring to mind) My only comment was to say that JLR do not make parts but have them produced to an agreed spec and standard. Some of the companies that produce these also sell the same item under a different name (gates belts for example) at the same spec and standard, however, as you have highlighted, this is not the case for all parts. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

Exactly. In most cases (ie when it’s not some woeful Indian pot metal casting in a Britpart bag), without proper analysis and testing, you just can’t know.

The problem, as Craig says, is that you don't know what quality you will get if you don't buy genuine, can you really rely on an OE (original equipment) part actually being that. If it's from the dealer then you know 100% that it will be. If it isn't described as OE but made to fit then there is no guarantee of it's quality.

There is the possibility that the OEM (original Equipment manufacturer) is actually selling an improved part over the specification that JLR asked for some years ago when the part was first made...

However, if it was good enough then, then it will be now and as you have no way of telling, ignorance is bliss...

If at all possible I will buy Genuine 99% of the time, I have just spent £500 on aggressive maintenance parts from Duckworths all genuine apart from the gearbox oil and sump, these are not genuine but came from ZF, Duckworths sell these and that means they are happy with the quality. That's good enough for me...

My original post was a tongue in cheek remark about the oil filter that JLR have made in China... that, again, is good enough for me..... Pete

I don’t disagree with Craig at all and will personally buy genuine when I can, indeed have just ordered a full set of LR discs for the motor and fitted a new LR battery. However in regards to brake pads, I can’t see how LR can justify charging the amounts they do for front pads, the rears and the discs are a small margin more so are worth going Gen but at £170 a set more for front pads..... Reputable brands like TRW/ZF will not sell totally shonky pads, and if I was doing them every day like CTC I would want them to go straight in no messing as it takes time and effort to fiddle about getting things to fit. but as a once every Couple of years job I can cope with a bit of filing to make sure they go in smoothly and don’t bind. 👍🏻

In terms of warranty, I can see your point as a garage, fitting genuine to a customer car makes perfect sense especially
If they aren’t local to you, no affect on the warranty, and ability to go to a LR dealer for rectification.

Pete I wouldn’t worry about the pan and filter. I can say 99% it will be exactly the same as the ZF one on the car as ZF made the gearbox in the first place and the both the old and new pan/filter will be stamped filtran as they make what’s fitted in the factory. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The issue we have found time & time again NMJ is pads overheated and either fading (when towing heavily for example) or squealing/squeaking! When the customer returns with complaints one of two things happen, they either loose faith in me! As clearly I haven’t done the job right if the brakes squeak & squeal all the time! Or we never see them again! JLR breaks just don’t do this!!! So it’s simple... For me to keep my good name, I won’t fit aftermarket!

One last point, from a buisness point of view! I fit JLR and I do the job once... I fit mintex for example and the customer comes back? I then have to fund the reworks, I loose ramp time & money!!! Simples...

Whereas if I do it and the squeal..... it’s my own fault and it will be me pulling them off again to fit JLR ones. I think you are fully Justified in your stance there Craig. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
