I suppose you could agrue that there are no genuine Land Rover parts as Land Rover don't actually make any. They outsource parts manufacturer to a number of different companies who produce these parts to an agreed spec and standard. So if you go to your local Land Rover dealer and buy a set of discs or pads they are not made by Land Rover but by a third party, what you are paying for is a Land Rover logo on the part and a sticker on the outside of the box. Some years ago I had a Porsche and it needed some rear arms, I had a choice of either buying genuine Porsche parts or third party TRW parts. My indy showed me the difference between the two which turned out to be the letter P ground off the TRW part. Turns out that TRW made the parts for Porsche, same spec, same quality but much cheaper in price. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE |

Speak for yourself, not me thank you very much. If I have the choice of an item at say £35 or a better quality one at £50 then I go for the latter. The problem often is trying to identify the quality. My "sad" hobby is model railways - most of the locomotives, rolling stock, track ect is produced/made in Europe (albeit with some far eastern components). The quality is there because the quality control is in Europe. My friends who buy Chinese models suffer all sorts of issues such as paint falling off, metal chassis crumbling, plastic mouldings distorting, rough running & so on. Having said that, the electronics side is good. Some of the German model makers returned to European production after brief flirts with Chinese manufacturing. So, you can keep your cheapness - I'll continue to pay a bit more & buy quality. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6 |

From a few years ago, I understood that, as Craig says, OE is not necessarily to JLR standard, probably having less stringent build tolerances etc. They are likely to be preferable to the more generic copy parts that are available..... each being priced accordingly.

Certainly nothing in my post is aimed at you Craig, or anyone else for that matter. There are some appaling aftermarket products out there made with barely any consideration for quality (LED Bulbs spring to mind) My only comment was to say that JLR do not make parts but have them produced to an agreed spec and standard. Some of the companies that produce these also sell the same item under a different name (gates belts for example) at the same spec and standard, however, as you have highlighted, this is not the case for all parts. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE |

Exactly. In most cases (ie when it’s not some woeful Indian pot metal casting in a Britpart bag), without proper analysis and testing, you just can’t know. |

The problem, as Craig says, is that you don't know what quality you will get if you don't buy genuine, can you really rely on an OE (original equipment) part actually being that. If it's from the dealer then you know 100% that it will be. If it isn't described as OE but made to fit then there is no guarantee of it's quality.

I don’t disagree with Craig at all and will personally buy genuine when I can, indeed have just ordered a full set of LR discs for the motor and fitted a new LR battery. However in regards to brake pads, I can’t see how LR can justify charging the amounts they do for front pads, the rears and the discs are a small margin more so are worth going Gen but at £170 a set more for front pads..... Reputable brands like TRW/ZF will not sell totally shonky pads, and if I was doing them every day like CTC I would want them to go straight in no messing as it takes time and effort to fiddle about getting things to fit. but as a once every Couple of years job I can cope with a bit of filing to make sure they go in smoothly and don’t bind. 👍🏻

The issue we have found time & time again NMJ is pads overheated and either fading (when towing heavily for example) or squealing/squeaking! When the customer returns with complaints one of two things happen, they either loose faith in me! As clearly I haven’t done the job right if the brakes squeak & squeal all the time! Or we never see them again! JLR breaks just don’t do this!!! So it’s simple... For me to keep my good name, I won’t fit aftermarket!
