4.4 or 4.2 Petrol Engine - 2005-2007

Evening all,

I have nipped in from the D3/D4 forum.Recognise a few names and will be good to get to know a few more.

I had a 3.0 Diesel D3 up until recently and it has now sold. I fancy having a play with a big petrol engine.

I have looked at D3 V8 then the FFRR caught my eye.

I am now looking at something between 2005 and 2007. This crosses me across 2 tax brackets and id prefer to stay out the high one if possible but not completely against it if it is worth it.

Car will do no more than 4,000 miles a year.

The big one for me is that there is a 4.4 engine and then as time goes on around 2006/07, a 4.2 engine.

I have searched the forum and can't find a definitive thread on this

Is there any preference between these 2 engines? I understand one occasionally requires work with head gasket?

Thanks in advance Thumbs Up

4.4 is BMW, not a bad engine but does have a few issues

4.2 is a Jaguar engine and reputedly far more reliable... they also did a Supercharged model and they are even better... Thumbs Up Pete

Thanks Haylands, Is it the BMW engine with the head gasket issue I've been reading about?

Edit: Nice thread with the off roader, was reading that earlier. Thumbs Up

I see there is also a 4.4 JLR engine at the same time as the 4.2 JLR engine is 2006.

Both pretty solid vs BMW?

Thanks all

Pre-facelift, the V8 is a 4.4 BMW M62; post-facelift there is a 4.2 litre supercharged Jaguar AJ-V8 or a 4.4 NA version (and the 3.6 TDV8).

United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Buckingham Blue

I drove plenty of 2002 to 2007 models through 2019 before settling on a 2006 4.2 Supercharged it was the awesome power delivery that got me and to hell with the 9 mph that I have averaged since. (obviously covid restricted)

But if I was to choose again I would avoid the 2006 MY as it is the change over year from BMW to JLR engines nothing to do with reliability as so far I have had no issues but one needs to refer to two different WM's, access is often difficult, IMHO its because they squeezed the JLR engine into the old body. However some of the technology is simpler ie non electronic rear diff and normal hand brake not the rubbish electric version.
You miss out on the terrain response system unless you buy a 2007MY available from September 2006

Also watch out for rust, mine looked nearly perfect when I bought it but bubbles soon appeared in the rear nearside wheel arch, absolutely shocking for this age of car, my 2000 golf is totally rust free, as is my wife's MGTF so I was very disappointed with JLR's build quality, not good enough for a car of this price.

Am I disappointed with my car? no absolutely not, I love it, the performance, the luxury, the look on my grandkids faces when they can use the rear entertainment system, the face on my wife when she first saw the car, she thought it would be awful because of the price! Did I mention the power? How does a block of flats move that quick?

IMHO go for the supercharged every time! the 4.4 just doesn't cut it.

Interesting replies, thanks all.

Finding the 4.4 slightly cheaper which now makes sense as it will be pre facelift.

Shall carry on reading through the forum Thumbs Up

Go for the 07 MY, great petrol 4.4 engine, better interior. Mine has done 120.000 mls with 114000 on lpg, (probably shouldn't say this) without problems. Car is now nearly 14 years old and still proud of it. But then again, I tap her on the dash and thank her every day. Ofcourse normal things like suspension, alternator renewed, gearbox flush done and those kind of things, but to me it's the best model they build.

If you can find one then the 4.4 AJV8 jag 07MY is the rarest, and if you can find one get a Vogue SE. Less of them out there than the SC, and while it hasn’t got the outright grin factor of the SC it’s a good engine and by many accounts very reliable (engine wise).

There are pros and cons of going for a facelift model. Anecdotally they rust more on the tailgates etc but conversely have a better cabin. The seats are said to be comfier in the earlier models yet I never found the 07 uncomfy, the standard Audi on the 07 is limited in terms of adding BT audio but you can put MP3’s onto cd rom and into the changer which gives about 20+ albums of storage.

Pays your money takes your choice. Read the L322 buyers guide in the wiki, lots of good pointers on what to look out for.

But be aware registration date isn’t what to look for. There are 2 on AT at the moment which aren’t facelift models but are on 56 and 07 plates, and advertised as 07 cars. They have the old Dash in them, which puts them as pre facelift models. So check carefully before going to view. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
