I realise that for CarPlay to work the phone has to be plugged in?? So wireless charging is less of an issue for me. there was talk that wireless CarPlay was coming...

Yes, for CarPlay to work, you need the phone to be plugged in. However, there is a device that could enable your system for wireless CarPlay. Below is the link, but you should check with them if the JLR system is compatible. As my 2019 P400e has no CarPlay(!), I cannot verify that... However, in my son's Ford Focus, carplay2air works well, there is a small lag though, but it picks the phone as you start the car without asking anything from you...

Just so you know when i got my 2017 RR Au it didn’t have CarPlay but there was an update available which allowed upgrade to it...?

From what I understand, for some parts of the world, for reasons unknown to me, they just didn’t install some telemetry module, whose absence makes impossible the software addition of CarPlay afterwards...
