I'm with Ken, I use a 2 post, 4 point Laughing lift and dread the day I have to use the standard jack. My P38 had a much more suitable bottle jack. I seem to remember reading somewhere, in either a hand book or possibly the Rave CD that Land Rover do not recomend using a 2 post lift? Regardless it is important to remember that these are heavy cars and care is needed no matter how you lift them.

Wow, all that fits in the back of the car for when you need to change a wheel at the roadside? Laughing

Please guys, my point, there are safe places to lift the car from underneith, (when you dont have a two post/four post/four point lift available) that may be more suitable than the scissor jack provided by BMW.

Ken, yes I've followed BBS from "the other" forum I find his posts technically interesting, but the touting I find poor form (unless of course he is forum sponser in which case that's fine I guess)

Guys guys guys!

Chill!

Thanks for all the pointers, that's what the forum is for though, difference of opinion and new ideas. Sadly I don't have a full workshop and a 2 post lift.

I, like most owners will want to avoid the rubbish scissor jack and find something not too expensive but safe to use occasionally.

By the sounds of it, I need to look into a more heavy duty trolley jack.

Ken, you mentioned pumping up the air suspension to off road height first, why is that and why does it not say to do this in the owners manual?

Adam it does in mine

If in normal height you are jacking the cars weight from 300 or so to 500 plus in OR height your jacking from 470ish to 500 plus just makes the job easier also on mine if I jack without putting it in OR Height when I lower the car the car sits on its arse sulking

In OR Height when you jack it goes in to extended mode first and stays there when lowering also you can put it in super extended from extended as well

Strangely I have found that the FF requires a jack with a better reach than is required for the D3's Confused

That's the issue, finding a jack with enough lift. I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds on a full tilt workshop version, it shouldn't be necessary. Discovery 4 HSE

I've just gone through my owners manual AND the workshop manual, and neither of them state to put it into offroad height. They do say put it in Park, lock the steering column, chock the wheels and even put it into low range, but no mention of the suspension settings.

I would have thought that locking it in access mode would mean not having to jack it as high to get the wheel off the ground surely?

The workshop manual states that for jacking the front of the vehicle you position the jack under the centre crossmember, trouble is, I only want to jack one side at a time not the entire car!

You'd think this would be simple...... Discovery 4 HSE

Yeah same issue, would need to remove the engine undertray which is simple but annoying. Wonder if a 4 tonne bottle jack would be better? Even though I have a flat concrete pad to do this on, the vehicle creeps as you jack it, bottle jacks don't like that! Discovery 4 HSE

Dan,

In your first 3 photos with the front of the car jacked and then on stands, the wheels are not off the ground. Is that cos you weren't doing that job that day ? Did your jack max out as it shows? Mine is doing just that. A fully inflated tyre doesn't leave planet earth with a normal 2T trolley jack. guess they are designed for mondeos etc. Discovery 4 HSE

I forgot to take photo's of the front so I jacked it back up, but not all the way, the axle stands go up to the next peg, then the tyre is about an inch off the ground....

At that point the jack is at it's absolute maximum and near verticle.
