Oil Change, or did they...!!

I wonder how many 5.0ltr and 4.4 diesel Full Fats have been serviced at a garage and they haven't bothered changing the oil because, apart from draining some out, there is no way to see if the oil is fresh with the demise of the dipstick from these models...

I wonder what bright spark came up with that idea...!!!

Mine was serviced only a thousand or so miles ago but I'll be changing the oil myself to make sure..!!

Anyone heard of a dip stick retrofit for either engine..? Pete

Chap on Disco forum has worked out how to use the drain suction tube as one Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

The double click on the cruise control reset with the bonnet open is invaluable when doing oil changes, otherwise it takes 20 minutes to reset between readings.

Markin, the problem is getting some oil out to either look at or send for analysis, they didn't put a dipstick in these engines, they are electronically monitored...!! Pete

what if you were to drain the oil, into a clean tray, refit the plug, and take a sample of the oil etc. and refill the same oil back whilst you work out if its worth changing. i realise fumbling around trying to get sump plug back in to get a small sample is fruitless of course.

I just assume they haven't changed the oil, so one of the first things I do on any 'new' car is change the oil. At least I know it's been done and has the correct oil in it, plus if they did do it, it's now had a good flush through.

Couldn't you just suck up about half a litre or so through the suction drain tube? I use a Draper suction drain thingy (as many on here do) and I'm sure you could do that. Drives:

this makes it easy to check oil color and clarity. when using it pull the piston up 1 to 1 1/2" and wait for the vacuum to bring the oil up. Thumbs Up

I know that Pete will say that B.B.is a dirty diesel and his is a petrol, but , the first time I changed my oil I accidentally put in 0.25 litre too much.
Nino told me to suck it out, so the very next day, with less than 10 miles done, I sucked out the extra and was gobsmacked to see how dirty black it was in such a short time.

If I had had the job done at a dealer I would have taken a lot of convincing that it had been changed.

In the end I ran it for 1,000 miles and changed it again to flush it out.

Mike, you have kind of inadvertently hit the nail on the head sir... Dirty derv engined cars! The oil turns black almost immediately so, it would be very hard to check... I have a viscosity meter which works great for derv engines...

Of course a petrol engined car will keep its clean oil for months so is easier to check...

My 405 so say had a service 2 days prior to me collecting it from Stafford LR and when i got home i checked and it was old oil! The service manager argue'd with me! Believe it or not, whilst he had a job sheet in front of him that had the job either "checked" or "changed" then that was 100% proof it was carried out and wouldn't enter into any debate any further!!!

Which leads us back to Pete's original post... "You either take a sample and check it or, you change it yourself? Or you need to have faith in the garage you choose to use sir"

On the topic of clean oil in a diesel , my 3.6 used to have exceptionally clean oil after each change. I did change it every 5k kilometres but my indie always commented on how clean it was. My L322 4.4 and L405 4.4s oil have never looked anywhere as good despite the same oil change schedule. 2015 4.4 AB

As good as that may seam Dolph, my guess would be that something was wrong with your 3.6... Not that it matters to you anymore as she's gone... Thumbs Up
