I think my Landrover adventure is coming to an end

Driving home from work today 2007 TDV8 i got less than a mile from home and as i pulled up to a red light I noticed coolant steaming off from the car along with the check coolant warning, No sign of any overheating on the gauge so continued to drive it home.

Noticed coolant was coming from the valley of the engine so immediately thought cracked thermostat housing so ripped it all to pieces and found that the top hose has become detached from the thermostat housing.

In my mind i am thinking has he cooling system has pressurised and blown the hose off, and am questioning if i even want to go down the route of replacing the thermostat housing (which clearly has been leaking a bit) refilling with coolant etc or just cut my losses and get rid of it to a breaker. Opinions, I know i am irritated with it at the moment but am sick of throwing money at this thing for it to continue to find more ways to cost more.

Has the hose been off recently as it shouldn’t just blow off! I would change the clip before refitting and consider using a good old jubilee clip, only my opinion as I don’t like those spring clips. Also if it’s pressurised, unless you’ve had a catastrophic failure the cap should let the pressure out.

That’s what I am concerned about, a hose should not pop off unless of a catastrophic failure however now it’s in bits and I can see that the thermostat has been leaking I am in a quandary as to do I replace the thermostat housing before rebuilding it only to find the engines scrap effectively writing the car off.

Personally I also don’t like spring clips but am seriously doubting I could be that lucky that it has just popped off?

Could it be that the hose has been taken off before and the clip was not put back on? I cant see any marks on the hose to indicate that it has been forced through the spring clip. You say that the thermostat has been leaking which could have been coming from the hose. "Curiosity killed the cat"....no point sitting in your rocking chair years down the line wondering "I wonder if a new thermostat would have cured that Vintage collectable L322 I had years ago?".
Without wishing to appear rude, for the cost of a new thermostat & a few hours work you'll know the answer, if it's fine you're laughing, if it's goosed.......easy, find the nearest WBAC! 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Not to get your hopes up too quickly, but that's the wrong hose clip that is fitted. It should be the same as the other two shown in the picture.
As others suggest. It's worth putting a new worm drive clip on and testing. Even without changing anything else at this stage. 2006 4.2 SC

I don’t think that is the wrong clip, as I had the mother of all jobs refitting them all when I replaced my alternator and they all were the same type as the one that has blown off. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Agree Alan, the clip is the correct one, and yes they are a b Censoredd to remove and put back, and once removed should be renewed in case it has gone weak.

Had the car three years now and cooling wise it’s been fine (lots of other silly problems) the thermostat appears to have only been weeping from a joint not this hose. A guy at work has commented that the hose appears to be oily and that could have contaminated it etc which I guess is possible I was surprised how “squishy” it was. I have contacted a dealer and I can get a thermostat and a top hose so will order them and get them fitted whilst replacing the spring clips with jubilees.

Best of luck with it, theres plenty of threads on here too on how to bleed the system if your not sure, did mine a couple of times for varying reasons and was always quite straightforward. Thumbs Up

Slow progress this weekend as I found another hose that I may as well change whilst i have it all in pieces however its all stripped and the old thermostat has been removed ready for replacement. Will order the parts and aim to get it back together next weekend.
