4.2 L322 SC TICKING Noise while revving

good evening guys

I am owner of a l405 SC and just picked up a L322 SC 4.2 as my work truck and daily driver. Everybody thinks I am mad, i think I do have a addiction and a problem but thats a story for another day.

Truck has done about 190k miles. Brand new air suspension all around. There is ticking noise while revving it, not at idle so much. Anyone know what this noise could be or point me in the right direction? I have attached some videos of the noise and how the engine sound at idle.

Now I put better headphones in I hear almost a knock. Could this be from low octane gas?

I hold the revs and don’t hear anything here

Me driving and not hear any knock or noise seems to pull OK

The truck was SO CHEAP couldn't even get a pair of wheels for my L405 for how much I paid for this L322. It needs lots of love and is a project but that makes it more exciting to me. I used to be a big bmw guy but I have converted into a LR junkie. It has good service history was owned by two guys and owned in Massachusetts unfortunately so there is rust.

Going to be making a list and getting a bunch of servicing done. After all that is done I will be going to do some little cosmetics to make it more my style. I plan on to hold it for a while these engines are really good from what I have seen.

Mmmmm the first video sounded more like an exhaust leak to me......but.......the second video on tickover sounds very much along the lines of timing chain rattle with timing chain guide rattle as well.
Those on here with far more expertise than I, will no doubt, give you their views. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Thanks for the reply friend.

I think the second video has made the injectors sound much louder than they are from the camera of the phone. The injectors in my 5.0 are just as loud.

I am unfortunately well versed in the noise of timing rattle from the 5.0 engines and there is no rattle or noise heard outside the truck that sound like a timing chain. Cold start does have some chain rattle but at almost 200k mile that is to be expected.

Never found a video online of the 4.2 or 4.4 engine idle but here is a 5.0 after time chain rattle fix and you can hear how loud the injectors are. Also attached video of a jag 5.0 SC with loud injectors. Sounds very similar to the ticking on the 4.2.

Would love any advice as this truck was bought from a dealer I could take it back if it turns out to be something serious. I have just put on some better quality headphones and now heard a slight knocking in the second video. Maybe from low octane gas as I doubt they using 93.

If that is the case I will bring it back to the dealer and spend a little more and get another one that is not as cheap but in the long run if it needs guides/chains right away then I will bring it back. It was OK on the journey home.

I was thinking the guides/chains are not that much of an issue on the 4.2 which is why I avoided many 5.0 L322/L320. Not to mention the injectors on those and the water pumps/cross over pipes are a big pain in the ass when they go.

It does sound like the timing chain and that’s probably why it was ‘cheap’ as it’s a big job changing that. I’d get a quote for changing the timing chain etc and then see how you feel about getting it done and/or speak to the garage 👍

Stay safe

Regards

John

Did the dealer acknowledge there was an engine noise?
Did anyone else confirm their suspicions?
And...........photo's please of the new one...........it's in the FFRR terms & conditions and also I believe it's the 28th amendment of the American Constituion! Laughing 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!
