BMW 4.4 litre low oil pressure

Hey team,
Had my l322 range rover for a year now haven’t had any problems serviced every 5000ks and always had everything done that was needed. Today parked the car as I was about to turn off BONG .... low oil pressure comes up. Turned off car then let it cool for 40 minutes restarted and a horrible clanking sound from front right hand drivers side in engine turned the rover straight off and had it towed. Sitting anxious waiting to here from the mechanics any guess what might cause this ?

I had this a number of times. The oil pickup point in the sump could be blocked. I’d drop the oil and take the pan off. Easy enough to do (And the cheapest before things are stripped) and you can also take the oil strainer off the oil pump as well (Held on by two bolts). You might find your timing chain in bits in the sump, hence the noise.

I hope this helps?

It may not be the timing chain itself (although it could be Shocked ) but the guides. These are plastic and do become brittle with the hi operating temps over time. It isn’t a big job. Holidaychicken on here has done some good write ups. I had mine done at 180,000 miles for £3000. It’s a front off job.

Read up on here for all the options Thumbs Up

Btw the engine does NOT have to come out, despite what some May say!

It’s a good idea to get as much done as you can. Vanos are also a good shout and not much extra cost. You may need a special crankshaft positioning tool tho. Check out holidaychicken. He has lots of good info.
