Whop whop noise?

I went out fir the first time in a week yesterday and noticed that Silvia has developed a whop whop noise similar to the noise of a distant helicopter.

At first I thought that it was the road surface, but it continued on roads I had previously driven and not had the noise. I then checked the tyres and tyre pressures which were all good.

I have checked for loose trim, wheel bolt tightness and am now scratching my head. The noise appears at around 40 mph and is there constantly.

Any ideas???

Jim

Distant helicopter perhaps. If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem!!

A calliper stuck/sticking! Drive it a while then put your hand on each wheel and see if one is much hotter than the others? 👍

Took the old girl out for a 5 mile drive (the rangie not my wife) and then measured the temperature of the brake callipers.

FNS = 20C, FOS = 19C, RNS = 19C, ROS = 54C

I have been meaning to change the handbrake shoes For a couple of months so also stripped down, cleaned and lubricated the ROS brake calliper.

Silvia is still on axel stands so when I have put her back together I’ll let you know if Cam had hit the nail on the head.

Make sure to take the Caliper carrier off the car and thoroughly clean with a wire brush/grinder brush wheel if possible. They rust which makes the pass stick in them. Sometimes it’s the pads sticking in the carrier rather than the Caliper itself. Worth trying as it’s a free fix if it works.

If not it’s a rebuilt calliper from a motor factor, normally
On exchange so they aren’t too much money. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I removed the carrier and calliper and cleaned as you suggested.

They are extremely corroded, which makes me think that they are the originals.

When you refit the pads make sure the just pop in nicely. You shouldn’t have to force them in at all. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

All back together now. What a #£&*@+ of a job it is to replace the handbrake shoes!

Been out for a drive and the whop whop noise has gone and the temperatures of all 4 brake callipers in the mid 20C range.

Handbrake also holds the car now as well so a productive 2 days.

Stu, how many times did you swear when trying to engage the top spring back in both shoes? 😂
