Brian, your comment required clarification as no-one on the thread had suggested going out other than to shop or exercise alone, yet you still felt it necessary to express your opinion just in case

if someone has a family member that has underlying medical problems or is over 70 and is susceptible to the virus, would it be wrong to visit a supermarket to load up [hoard] on essentials on that one visit so that they dont have to risk going out again and getting infected...

I don’t normally spout off my personal opinions on public forums but feel we all need a reality check at times. The death rate (uk or worldwide) is minimal compared to other forms of death (heart disease deaths in uk: over 65,000). I know there is a chance of it spiralling but these lockdowns are more about enabling the NHS to cope. (Cynics may also say it allows the government to say they have succeeded whereas doing nothing would show up the parlous state of the NHS)

It’s all about risk assessment. The current infection rate in bristol for example is 0.007%. If you avoid public transport and walk or drive and limit your exposure to others whilst out there is little chance of exposure.

Having said that, the most secure way not to cross-infect or get infected is to remain at home and avoid contact with anybody where possible.

I do feel the shops could do more to limit hoarding. For example in other countries, some are charging £280 for a second or third similar item. However that could affect those who are bulk buying for other vulnerable people.

It’s a tricky situation. My only thought is to let common sense rule and think about one’s own actions and responsibility to others.

Certainly it would be prudent for all households to ensure that they have "in reserve" enough basics to last for three weeks. You just need a little extra of most things & no need to hoard at all.

We do need to take care, extra care & lots of it. Lets face it, if high profile figures (Prince Charles now) can catch this hideous disease then any of us can. It appears that you can be infected from airborne or from surfaces.

Standing in the back of your supermarket delivery truck & seeing a minicrowd of people milling round to see what you are about to deliver give you a different perspective.

Yes, I'm going out later - to go to work moving food supplies. I'm keeping my distance from colleagues & wipe over all "touchy" surfaces in my truck cab before driving off. Fortunately, I work through an agency for a responsible company, both who take their workers health & safety seriously.

I visited my usual Tesco this morning, just after the special hour for designated vulnerable people had passed.

I have to say that the supermarket seem to have this all worked out really well. They are limiting the number of shoppers allowed in the store which means there is a queue outside, but even then i waited less than 10 mins to get into the store. Once inside it was all very calm and everybody was behaving sensibly, not crowding each other, only picking up one or two of each item. With the exception of some tinned and jar foods they had almost everything they normally stock although quantities were lower than usual. They even had loo roll, although restricted to one pack per customer.

It was a bit surreal to see the store so devoid of shoppers but does seem to demonstrate that most people are being sensible.

I note a few comments about hoarding, it’s bad to make assumptions, I shop for my parents and in-laws as they are all in the very at risk groups, I also have to shop for my family and don’t want to make lots of shopping trips and the risks involved, I also buy for neighbors when out as they do for us. So when people look at 3 packs of loo roll etc in my trolley and roll their eyes it makes me mad- 3 packs of loo rolles between 8 or more doesn’t go far.

There are others shopping for others as volunteers for the at risk groups, they buy larger numbers than others expect.

Just saying, be careful on your assumptions and making comments when you see ‘excessive shopping’ going on.

Also those who planned should be able to by what they want, what happened to all the billions getting the UK ready for Brexit and then find we don’t have enough food or PPE for the NHS.... look out January 2021 when Brexit hits and supply chains really start to struggle.

Can't understand the logic in that if you are in a car, what difference does it make whether you go one mile or twenty.
If you are in a car you are self isolated and not going to come into contact with anyone else.
Must be a Spanish thing.

Nearest supermarket = you're not travelling somewhere else under the pretence of food shopping

It’s to limit possible transfer from a ‘dirty’ location to a clean location, being in a car isn’t the issue, it’s what you do and touch at the other end. Although it’s inconvenient as the further supermarkets are bigger and have more choice I think it’s a good thing in slowing the spread. And as Alister said it helps stop the ‘we are just going food shopping’ and nipping off somewhere else.

It’s a very clear message here... no bike shops are open, no off licenses, no diy shops... just food and pharmacy’s... no going out in ‘family groups’, no going out to ‘exercise once per day’, no building work, no 30 GBP... Just stay home or get a 600 or 30,000 euro fine for the second offense.... then prison. It’s clear, not the bojo wish-washy lots of grey areas, very slowly rolled out.

The police are enforcing it here with vigor, everyday- you won’t get away with anything for long.


People are dying- stay home.
