Suspension - car keeps wanting to go into Extended Mode

2007 TDV8

So... I've just replaced the front air springs (one was leaking). That fix went ok, but I've still got a problem that I'd hoped would sort itself out as part of the process... funnily enough it didn't!

Having replaced the bags, I was cycling through the suspension height settings to test it all. Every time I set it to go down it decides it wants to go into extended mode. I'm constantly tying to override it... and eventually I get 'suspension fault'. Switch ignition off, then on again, fault clears and back to altering the height.

My gut feeling tells me that this is possibly down to sticking height sensors.... anyone got any opinions on this? And more importantly, can they be lubricated, or is it a replacement job...??!

Or it could be something else completely! (It had done the same thing a couple of times before I changed the air springs).

Got to be honest, I'd no idea even what they looked like until I'd googled it!!!

Any opinions / input greatly appreciated.

First thing to do is drill out the sintered brass exhaust valve on the compressor.

And make sure the height sensors haven’t swung round and are upside down or similar.

I read on here they can do that when they are disconnected and if you don’t notice you connect them back up....

Never seen it or had the issue myself so can’t elaborate.

Someone else can explain better I’m sure...

Yes, it looks like you have accidentally swung the sensors around be reinstalling. First thing I would do is to disconnect the sensor and swivel it around to the other side and see what happens. If worst comes to worst you have to order a new one which I did right away with the new struts when I had to change them.

Hi.
To be clear, the height sensors have not been disconnected at any point during the process, so that can't be the issue.

I'll be trying the compressor exhaust valve fix today and report back. Mine is intermittent though, so unsure if this will sort it.

Just feeding back with findings. Thank you Dr Rob. It was indeed the sintered brass exhaust valve on the compressor being blocked.

For the record, I did do a search, but my symptoms being slightly intermittent, and able to be overridden, didn't seem quite so severe as most of the threads that I found.

There are two types of sintered brass exhaust valves; my compressor was replaced a few years ago, and I think I now have the updated version of the compressor with a chunkier looking valve - right on top and easily accessible. I think it is an M12 thread.

Rather than drill a hole in it (IMHO it is 'sealed' for a reason), I've left mine to soak for a few minutes in frequently replenished boiling water, then dried it off / applied heat with a blowtorch (careful not to over-do it). I've now refitted it and it is lowering perfectly. Pumping up is still slow though, so I intend to purchase a replacement part to minimise stressing the compressor.

The part number for mine is LR025940. Looks like about £40 (!) but I've not fully searched yet. Any top tips on sourcing it cheap are appreciated!

You prob saw my thread then where it was stuck in extended mode and I ended up drilling it out. Cos the air can’t escape fast enough to lower the car in a timely manner, it assumes there is an obstacle underneath so goes to full height.

I’ve had no issues since, but I get what you mean about not drilling it and replacing. I read somewhere it’s a service item at some point, but bet garages hardly ever do them.

I think a tiny hole is a good fix for it and a lot cheaper than what LR want.
