Fuel gauge giving wrong reading

Noticed this at the weekend, fuel gauge was showing full, after 5 mins dropped down the 3/4 and stayed there for the rest of the small trip home.
I expected the correct fuel level to be about half at this time knowing I only put £60 in from Saturday morning.

I have read a but about fuel senders not showing the correct level but these all seem to show less in the tank than actual. So wasn't certain mine would be the same problem.

Any help would be appreciated 2011 Vogue 4.4 TDV8

Hahaha, I had a similar problem when I picked mine up last week. At the dealer, it had about a quarter tank. I filled it up and it went to full. It went down normally for about 150 miles, then the fuel gauge was slowly going up Laughing

Driving a 5.0 S/C I was well impressed Thumbs Up But the reality was that it was overreading. I haven't had it happened in the next 300 miles though.

The fuel gauge takes an average reading across two level senders, as the L322 has saddle tanks...

There is a well known issue with wiring plugs inside the tank that the fuel seams to corrode... This can give a high/low or even NO reading at all... Thumbs Up

Thanks I had read about the senders giving bad reading if there was a problem with them but all cases I could find was only about low reading, If it can give all different readings I'll take a look at replacing the unit. No doubt its not going to be an easy job. 2011 Vogue 4.4 TDV8

There are 2 units in the tank, you'll probably be best to remove both (they are connected together) and work on replacing the connectors with them out of the tank -- it's a squeeze to get them out through the hole, but with a bit of Houdini they will come out. Just be careful with the plastic parts on the top of the springs -- mine was brittle and I broke it when removing Sad

I've just completed this job on my 2010 3.6 TDV8 as my fuel gauge stopped reading completely.

I would recommend plenty of plastic sheeting and absorbent materials to try and contain the diesel going everywhere.

I removed the whole assembly from the tank, the left hand sender came out first and then the pump unit itself. Both are retained by a plastic bracket (pictured above) mounted on springs. Press this down to release the sender and pump unit.

Upon reassembly the metal dowels on the pump unit which hold the springs kept dropping down into the pump unit.

You can remove the pump from the swirl pot by pressing in the 3 plastic tabs and levering upwards.

The dowels can the be firmly pressed back into place for reassembly.

Lastly, wear clothes you don't care about... mine have gone in the bin!

Prob a job ill leave for a bit the car has enough other issues more pressing, I can cope with an iffy fuel gauge for a few weeks. 2011 Vogue 4.4 TDV8

Just be aware that if the guage reads empty then your car will go into limp home and possibly stop altogether (I can’t remember exactly what mine did), even if you have a full tank

I think mine did stop at some point but I can’t be certain however it definitely went into limp home repeatedly- it was a 120 mile trip home that I’ll never forget!
