Retrofitting PDC

Hi All,

Before my current foray into the L322, I used to have a Rover 75, then MG ZT, then MG ZT-T.....and one of the things I used to enjoy was retrofitting various dealer extras, a lot of it being the same BMW sat nav from the early vehicles. Now, I have no plans to do that particular task on the L322, but what I have been looking at is Parking Sensors, or Parking Distance Control as I think it is referred to here?

So....first question, has anyone attempted this previously, and if so, any glaring things that I need to be aware of?

I'm looking to replace the rear bumper anyway at some point, so I was going to get one with parking sensors in, get the ecu, and fit them. I also believe I'll need to fit the switch on the console where the air suspension controls are / replace that panel, but what I can't tell is if a stand alone parking sounder is needed or if the sound is generated by the instrument cluster or similar.

I'm willing to bet it'll need to be coded onto the L322 as well, but I'm just trying to see if it's possible first.

I thought they all had pdc!!

You will need the pdc module <£20 eBay , 4 sensors or 8 if doing front to (I seem to think you have to do front and back) both bumpers.

I may be wrong but pretty sure it doesn’t even need coding as the module just sits on the ibus Current stable:

You might find its much cheaper / easier to fit an aftermarket kit.
I fitted a set to our Discovery 2 rear bumper for all of £15 via eBay seller "Londoncolour".
They work as well as the "OE" versions on our 2007 L322.
The only minor difficulty you might have is colour coding them - but probably the same problem for second hand OE sensors.

You can buy aftermarket kits for front + rear too. Paul,

Mine has a sounder in the rear of the car, under the drivers side parcel shelf side trim, the panel that sits below the rear side glass. It’s an approximate 2” deep by 2” diameter, black speaker unit. I assume there will be a similar unit at the front and both have different pitch to differentiate between front and rear. Hope that makes sense and is of help. 2012 Westminster TDV8 4.4 Indus Silver

Thanks for all the comments - I appreciate everyone's input.

If I wasn't going to replace the rear bumper at some point, aftermarket would probably make more sense, but I figure I can get everything I need cheap enough and have it OEM. I did something very similar with an MG ZT, and given it's probably the same tech, then it should be a very comparable exercise.

The sounder sounds (forgive the pun) pretty much identical to what I expected, I think a quick check to see if the connector is tucked away is in order, but so far it sounds promising.

Just a little update to this....it would appear it is indeed possible and I have made a little progress.

As I previously mentioned, I wanted to replace the rear bumper anyway, and found one with parking sensors and loom included. I sourced an ECU and rear speaker, plus the centre console section with the additional PDC button.

The wiring connectors for the loom and speaker were tucked away, so just plugged everything in and it appears to be working, in as much as there is a fault beep. I'm going to connect the front up, and if necessary, give my friend with a T4 a visit just to make sure it's fully enabled, and see whats generating the long beep.

I'll update again once I get it all finished.

Further update - front bumper fitted with parking sensors, and now that the ECU is playing, I was able to check everything. There are two failed sensors on the front, but the rears still don't want to play - testing via diagnostic tool shows they are working correctly so I'm assuming at this point, the car needs to be told PDC is fitted and activated.

Still, progress is progress. Laughing

Final update - all working!!

Front Sensors were fine, just a couple of loose connectors and once firmly pushed home, everything kicked in with no further programming needed.

Nice positive end, so naturally to counterbalance that I now have a grumbling bearing. Cosmic balance in action I suppose.

Well done. If you keep adding extras you'll have to change your username!
