Can anyone please advise?

I telephoned to book the car in for an early service the other day and was advised that the 3.0 TDv6 should have the Cam belt changed (main dealer rates quoted were about £800 for the Cam belt change alone).

Is this correct?

if its as easy as the 3.0 tdv6 disco then 800 quid is way more than it should cost

if its the same as the 2.7 then its not..... there are 2 belts on the 2.7 and the rear one is a PITA to do. Not sure if they got rid of this on the 3.0 though? mine was done as part of the 7 year service on the disco last year.

800 is a lot though.

edit just looked at the above schedule and it looks like front and rear belts. they must have a method for it, I dont know where they have got that it needs doing at 50k? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks for the replies, it was a 'false start' thanks to the Farnell generic service booking call centre.

The car has had an early 'interim service' for £520 incl VAT which included a diff oil change (nowhere near time to change cam belt)

The L405 3.0 TDv6 cam belt (or timing belt) should be changed - according to LR schedules - at 7 years or 112,000 miles, whichever is first.

The cheapest main dealer price for doing the job that I'm currently aware of (3.5 hours labour time listed) is £496 including VAT

If that’s the price for just the cam belt? It’s to expensive. If it’s for both the cam belt and the pump belt that’s at the rear of the engine? It’s cheap ish.

As said. The rear pump belt on the l405 is timed. Unlike the same belt on the 2.7. I knew of mechanics that could fit the new rear belt on the 2.7 by accessing it from the top. Thus making it a cheaper job than the dealers quoting for a body off job.
Due to the l405 belt being timed I’m not sure if it would be as easy. Just for those who don’t know. If the rear belt snaps the worse thing that will happen is the car will stall and you’ll have to get it recovered. Unlike if the cam belt snaps it’s a new engine.

I've seen the rear belts break up on the 2.7, eating their way through the belt cover, then tearing through wiring looms...

Never seen it on the 3.0, but I've heard about it from other specialists...

And book time for the job of front and rear belts is 4.4 hours. Multiply that by your dealers hourly rate, and ask why they can do it for less than £500

MD costs vary considerably to change the L405 3.0 TDv6 cambelt. It should be changed at 7 yrs / 112,000 miles.

One local MD will do it for £496.

The MD currently servicing the car and carrying out two significant cost warranty repairs, wants a further £575 to change the cam belt. They won't budge on the price despite us buying the car from them, the car always having service and maintenance work done with them (espite offering them the cheaper quote from the other MD).

Another MD explained, "we can offer you a significant reduction if you have the belt and an oil service done together so it will only cost £1270"... Said oil service was £320 so that'll be £950 to change the cam belt

Another MD quoted £1324 to change the cambelt at the same time as doing an "Interim Service"

Is that front belt only, or rear belt too?

Does it include new idler pulleys etc?

I think they said it will take 3.5 hours labour.

Now being told that quotes given were in accordance with LR MD "fixed price servicing" and that yes, there are two belts, but the quotes only cover replacing one belt! Well that's what one MD is saying, another is admitting it's a kit and they've no idea.

Poor poor poor from the LR Main Dealer network once again. They advise me the cam belt needs changed. I try to get it done straight away and get quotes from 4 different MD Service Depts (all of them owned by different groups). All 4 quotes were wildly different... so how does that equate to LR fixed price rates?

And not one mentioned 2 belts. Only when the customer asked, did one of them declare they only intend to change 1 of 2 belts

Why (if you're meticulous about your car maintenance) - them knowing how dismissive they and warranty providers can be when seeking to dodge warranty and/ or good will claims - would a LR MD Service Dept. not think to advise a customer if there are 2 belts and yet they only intend to deal with 1?

Another MD Service Dept. is now telling me that they only charge the part price for replacing the second belt because they're in about it all anyway to replace the first one. I honestly think they just make it up as they go along.

I've rang the LR Extended Warranty company. They have told me that if you have the LR Extended or Select Warranty that you can use a non-LR MD VAT registered garage for servicing and maintenance, as long as they use genuine LR parts but... the chap at Car Care Plan said, "We would prefer you to use the LR main dealers though"...

LR MDs are getting worse IMO. It's got a lot to do with incompetent, couldn't care less customer service advisors (not all of them of course, just it seems the ones I end up dealing with).

...might get this done at a trusted independent LR specialist.

Ps... the car hasn’t actually hit the cam belt change threshold yet anyway
