Sorry, poor photo. Yesterday i thought it was coming from the middle of the below pic (under the 90 degree flexible inlet hose), today I can't hear anything!

Thanks Mike, yes I was thinking something on the accessory belt. Has an alternator 5 year s ago (only 15K miles though) so I was thinking tensioner. My local garage diagnosed a wheel bearing but I can hear this at idle in Park. It might need a bearing too but it can't be the whole problem. Think I'll take it to a specialist. To answer your question, no the noise seems pretty constant. It's not AC related as have tried turning that off. Could it be intake/exhaust leak or a gearbox/transfer box type issue? New fluid? |

If you're hearing the noise at the top/front of the engine, it's unlikely to be the gearbox fluid.
