Towing electrics

FFRR 4.4 TdV8, 2011 MY. One of the previous owners has fitted an aftermarket towbar to the car I just bought. Nothing wrong with that except the car doesn't recognise when a trailer is connected and I like things to work the way they should. Is it likely that the wrong wiring harness has been fitted (in which case presumable I can simply replace it with the correct one) or is there some form of electrickery in LR's electronics that aftermarket suppliers are unable to access? Drives:

Could you take some photos of the 'bar, sockets and the interior socket/plug in the spare wheel well for us?
It may help with identifying the corret/incorrect fittings.

Oh and the aftermarket bar make. Cheers
Richard

Gap report that when fitting to your car you don't need to tell the car you've done anything as it should recognise you've plugged into the socket provided -- as stated a photograph of the socket in the wheel well should help a diagnosis. Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I'll try and get some photo's up shortly. The towbar is made by AI Towbars of Sheffield if that's any help. Thanks. Drives:

Well, I finally had a root around in the spare wheel well today and found the grey multi-pin socket for the towing electrics. Lord knows why someone has gone to all of the trouble splicing in the wiring, I can only assume they had no idea they are plug and play.

Having just bought myself another 4.4 TdV8 without a tow bar, I'll be checking the electrics on the existing car using the new loom that I'll be getting for the tow bar on the 'new' car and if it works ok, I'll simply replace what's there with a new loom and blank off all of the 'old' wiring. Drives:

I fitted a genuine LR 13 pin to my 2011 4.4 tdv8. Plug and play. Only tricky bit is getting the rubber grommet to sit properly in the bodywork hole. Used some silicone spray as lube Thumbs Up
I don’t tow but use it to charge battery now and again with an adaptor for my ctek Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I know this has been asked before but I can't find the information now.

I've got a 2nd hand towbar to fit and need the electrics for my 2010. There seem to be numerous options available.

Is there a single kit that will do the job? I just want to be able to run a light board for a bike carrier initially but don't want to limit myself. Should I get 1 7 pin or a 13 pin or a twin?

The PF Jones kits seem much cheaper than genuine LR. Are they any good? 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

In answer to the OP & kooky the PF Jones Kit is "plug & play" - fitted one to my 03 plate L322.

They do single x 7-pin, double x 7-pin & 13-pin variants. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

P F Jones supply the Westphalia towbar which is , IMO, the best for the RR. I fitted one and I also fitted 13 pin electrics. I also have an adapter which means I can use the 7 pin for a trailer I have.

With a removable flange (AKA Farmers) hitch it is very discreet when not in use. John

Personally I thing any RR (except for the Sprout) looks undressed without a towbar. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

Thanks, I was just trying to work out which type of socket would be best to get. Sounds like the PF Jones kits will be ok then. The genuine LR ones are MUCH more expensive. Do they do anything the PF Jones ones don't? 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

The LR Genuine 13PIN kit is worth the extra £ IMHO. And it's plu and play for a 2011 Thumbs Up Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Normally I would always go genuine, but it's more than 3 times the price of the PFJones one for what appears to be exactly the same thing. The PFJones one should be plug and play too shouldn't it? 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE
