Thinking of L322 5.0 SC

Hi, been away for a few years with a C7 RS6 (lovely wagon) and before that had an early 2014 SDV8 L405 when that launched and before that a 2011 4.4TDV8. Now I fancy a L322 5.0 SC... I think.

There is something about the L322 lately that keeps distracting my thoughts. I feel its ageing very gracefully and still looks great. After quite an expensive car, where you're always concerned about parking it and where you left it and someone damaging or stealing it, I really fancy a rugged car again and an older L322 seems to tick all my boxes.

Having had 2 diesels I fancy the 5.0 SC this time. Was hoping there might be some in the classifieds but not at the moment. What d you guys feel is a fair price/mileage to aim for?

many thanks,

I went from a 3.6 TDV8 to a 5.0SC and while both had their merits I'm a big fan of the 5.0. Apart from the fuel consumption it's just about my ideal car.

In terms of price and mileage it's tough to give a guide as there aren't many good ones out there. As with any L322 you'll need to go see it, drive and look at the service history. Most importantly look at the condition it's in which will probably tell you more about the car than anything else. I also took a scanner with me to read faults after a test drive to see what needed doing to it.

Main thing to look for is whether the timing chain/guides/supercharger coupler have been replaced - it's a £3-5k job depending on where it's done and will need doing at some point. I bought mine with a full LR service history at a sensible price then had the timing chain work done so I know it's been done properly by a reputable Indy.

I know there are 3 other 5.0 owners on here that I've talked to - not sure if there are more.

If you have any specific questions please ask away here or by PM.

Very Happy Did see that one, looks lovely, but really want a 5.0 SC this time. I'm in no mad hurry, i'll hang around see what pops up, but cheers anyway. 2010 5.0 Supercharged AB Stornoway Grey/Ivory

Thanks for the guidance, much appreciated. There seems to be a few for sale on the market but i'd have much rather found one from here knowing it had been looked after. Does the timing chain etc have to be replaced? I know what can happen if its not done, but are all engines afflicted with the same issue?

Yes the timing chain will need doing at some point as will the supercharger coupler. You could always risk it if you're not planning to keep the car for long but it's potentially a lot of the engine to replace if it goes and the cost of that would probably write off the car.

Mine wasn't particularly noisy when I had it done but did it for peace of mind. In short the timing chain guides are a poor design and fail over time allowing the timing chain to stretch and potentially fail completely. You can read a lot about it on the US sites as there are a lot more 5.0s over there.

I don't recall exactly which years are affected but from memory it's 2010 to 2013MY cars - RR and RRS I think it was fixed in the second year of the L405 but I could be wrong on the dates.
