Good day: fitted new battery. Bad day: found oil leak(s)...

Evening all,

Successfully fitted a new battery today, went without a hitch...so a BIG thank you to the various members who built the Battery Change thread in the Wiki section. I followed it word by word.

However...whilst under the car and using a stethoscope in a attempt to locate this blasted ‘ticking’ noise I found an oil leak:

It’s right above the anti-roll bar where the subframe cross member is. It goes upward both side around the bell housing, so one would think it’s the typical 4.4 TDV8 leak(s) but...it appears to be ATF oil & engine oil. On the heat shield it’s clearly cherry-red and had no proper oil smell, but the rest is black and clearly used Diesel engine oil. None in vast quantities but enough to splatter the exhaust . It’s new, as there were no leaks in early December (inspected when I did the front pads)

I am going to start with changing the O-Rings and oil cooler/housing gaskets (all parts on order) start conservatively etc.

The gear box is not leaking from its drain plug or pan, all the oil is coming further forward toward the engine.

Can anyone advise if the gearbox oil has cooler pipes or radiator running around the area of the bell housing, upper or lower? Is there a known 8-speed leak I should know about?

I had the air box removed today whilst fitting the new battery, I peered down the back of the engine and the bell housing looked dry on top at least.

You can see black engine oil accumulating on the starter.

Anyway, good and bad...

If I learn anything new I will share it, cheers. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

Did you check the oil cooler and associated pipe for leaks? Easy to see when air box is off. Stand on a box and peer down the back of engine and look forwards ...so to speak. If it looks like this then oil cooler gaskets need doing.

If no leak then it will be bone dry like the second image further down this thread

Thanks DrRob,

No I didn’t, I’d put the engine bay all back together and was loosing the light by the time I’d spotted the leak. It’s my next job - a through top end inspection. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

It’s tricky to get mark 1 eye ball on the oil cooler and pipe. I used a small step to get higher, a little mirror to peer down and forwards if that makes sense Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I read the 21-Page leak thread in the wiki, actually feel confident about tackling it.

But the ATF fluid? Has me worried. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

It’s red trans oil, a whole load tonight leaking out, not from the pan but around the bell housing.

Too high up to be the oil trans cooler lines. Would the area be wet if the torque converter is leaking?

Anyway, time for the mechanic with a 4-post lift me thinks. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

Yep. Have you got a decent place locally?
There is a rubber plug on the lower bellhousing that can be removed for inspection....it’s quite obvious when underneath Thumbs Up

I’m half way up a mountain in Spain...lol

It’s either the main dealer in Alicante (not 1st choice) my main mechanic or a workshop in town - who do happen to have a lot of interesting machinery go through their doors which does fill me with some hope.

I am gutted as this is like my P38 all over again.

I’ll post updates.

Cheers all! 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior
