I've had a search of the wiki and some posts but I've not found the answer.

My rear wiper is hanging vertically and does not respond/move. Any suggestions on what to try first? Is this a common fault?

It's a TDV8 L322 56 plate. Thanks guys.

Well if you haven't checked the fuse, try that first.

If the fuse is ok, switch the rear wiper on and assist the wiper movement with your hand. The wash can leak in to the motor and the gears can get knackered.

If that doesn't get it going, you're probably looking at a new motor. They're quite a common failure.

Thanks for the reply. From my reading, am I correct in assuming there are 2 fuses? Do you know which ones? Looks like my first port of call is Amazon for some fuses or, could I whip out a similar fuse to try it from something else?

I've read about cleaning the motor up and fixing the leak if there is one. Is this worth a go?

No wonder small shops & suppliers are going out of business if people depend on amazon for stuff like fuses.

I was being a little tongue in cheek but most filling stations have a small section (usually rucked into a corner) that sells a few bulbs, fuses & other bits.

I've not tried rebuilding the motor but I know people have done it successfully.

Can't remember which fuses are involved. You don't necessarily need replacement fuses, they might be fine. Check which fuses are responsible for the wiper, pull them out, inspect the wire and make sure it I see continuous/ not burned out.

Thank you all. I think I will go down the route of cleaning the motor and crossing my fingers. Grateful for any help off anyone who's managed to do this.

With the wiper hanging horizontal, I'm thinking it might need a new gear if it's been worn out but I've not checked it yet.

UPDATE - so the jet is letting water out and I can hear the wiper motor but it's not moving. Should I remove and take the motor apart to see what's going on. Surely this is a good sign.

I bet your motor cog has stripped or unseated itself. It’s dead easy to open the motor and clean/have a look/repair.

Cheers. I will dismantle and take a look. I've seen a replacement gear/cog if I need one.

had this problem a few months ago myself you' ll probably find a small damaged area of three or four teeth on the cog.
they are available on flea bay for a few quid but it can turn into a pain in the arse. So a word of warning.
the cogs also fit some minis and beemers.
make sure you get one with the magnet fitted. when I got the first one no magnet so swap them ! no chance
round magnet in original and square holder in new cog, So I got another with magnet all fitted up and wiper arm was stopping where ever it wanted ,no intermittent an no washer got a mate ( electrical wizard ) to check it out
and all the mischief was down to the fact what ever lovely person had fitted the magnet in the sweat shop it came from was the wrong way round magnets are poled ,and the hall effect pickup was not seeing the magnet and stopping every thing working correctly . Take some pics when you pull the cover to make sure the mechanism goes back together the same. and good luck. Range rover 4.2 SC 06MY.
