Fuel issues

Hi,

So I am a happy(-ish) owner of a, new to me, 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue with a little under 75.000 miles on it.

Picked it up 2 days ago from the previous owner and went to an LR specialist for a check up/service. On the way there the computer went from a range of 50 miles to 93 miles. I stopped to put in 20 litres of diesel but neither the fuel meter or range changed.

Handed the car to the garage and they called me yesterday to say they had recalibrate something and all was fine.

Picked it up yesterday from the garage and went to the station to fill it up again but now the pump just cuts off - as if the tank is full : /

Managed to get 40 litres in (took a while) and an additional 33 litres today and the meter is showing about 40 % full with a range of 162 miles.

Meanwhile I have driven about 200 km so assuming the tank was completely empty it should have about 70 litres in it now...

The yellow fuel guard has not been activated.

Any ideas what it can be?

Can it be a coincidence or is this related?

Any tips much appreciated! RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Brilliant, thanks guys!

This only takes care of half the problem tho : /

Or do you think this will also solve the issue with pump cutting off when filling up? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

I think the pump cutting out while the nozzle is in the tank is not unusual for the car. Mine often cuts out so much that now I just stick the nozzle in upside down. There is a thread on here that someone started on the same subject. Some fuel station pumps deliver quicker than others.

Once you have the fuel gauge probelm sorted you can then decide if the filling is a problem, or just

"one of those FullFAt things" Smile Cheers

Difficult to say about filling -- occasionally the pressure from a pump is too much -- it could be the 'wrong fuel' checker has been activated Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Thanks for all answers!

Garage fixed the service bulletin as per above and fuel gauge now working as it should except;

The fuel gauge shows approx 20 liters (4.4 gallons) more than is in the car.

The range therefor is always shorter as compared to the empty/full meter if that makes sense? This is annoying as the car thinks it has a full tank even though it hasnt...

Presumably all reading should come from the same sensors so this is very strange to me?

Any ideas how to fix? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

to clarify;

When the car indicates that it is full I get a range of about 500 miles.

The figure should be closer to 620 miles according to average mpg on the computer.

This would also add up perfectly with my own calculations RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

The 4.4 TDV8 range is typically:

300 miles all city
400 mixed
500 motorway

(These are broad strokes, there was a thread regarding range a while back.)

So not sure where you get the 620

Are you in km or miles? Cheers, Greg

Hi Greg,

I´m in KM.

Maybe I am confused here but;

tank holds 97 litres and I get more or less 9.5 litres/per 100km (mostly county roads and highway)

so range from full should be at least 970 km right?

to put this in imperial terms;

full tank holds 21.3 gallons, I get 30 mpg so range should be around 640 miles right?

Or am I making a complete fool of myself?

I know the FF´s have their quirks but the reading is off by at least 20 %... RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

From my experience I agree with Greg on what miles are achievable.

Just a quick question, did the garage replace all the connectors -- it's easy to miss the one on the second float in the left hand side of the tank! Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

@bushy 30; I am pretty sure they only did the right hand side now that you mention it : /

So the gauges are getting separate info from 2 sensors, one each side? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

I have fuelling enigmas too! In the UK Asda pumps fill ok, but Tescos and Morrisons take an age to fill, one of the reasons I got a TDV8 rather than a petrol car as I hate filling up
Travelling across Europe is usually OK until I get to Bulgaria and then its a 40 litre fill due to the length of time at the pump.

In October ,I filled up just outside Sofia airport ,drove 3km to the airport to drop my mother off and the fuel gauge said 20km to empty. Stopped the car .restarted and then back to full. I will do the fix as highlighted above when the weather warms up a bit.

As for range, normal driving around home etc ,the gauge reads around 700km on a full tank . If I do a journey back to UK after the first tank the range is around the 1000km mark, the highest I have seen is 1170km.
I can do the journey across Europe 1850miles on 3 tanks of fuel depending on traffic, If pulling a trailer or with a roofbox add on half a tank.
I am happy with these figures for the size of the car and I do not drive in an economical way !

@aggraa yeah that makes sense to me too. Should be around 1000 km of range on full tank after highway driving when mpg is high.

I`ve now tried five different stations in three different countries and i can only go half speed at the pump. Guess its just something i have to live with. Annoying tho if the tank only fills up 80 % as putting diesel in is tedious...

The garage I went to did the sensor correction in about 40 min with two people but then again it seems they only did half the job... RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

40 mins is not possible -- even with two people -- they likely only managed to get to one of the connectors -- the others are closer to the pump -- so the pump has to come out (right hand side of tank) and then close to the float on the left hand side (also needs to come out, but out of the right hand side hole as it's connected to the pump) Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8
