Greasy Windscreen - Cleaning tips

Somehow my windscreen has suddenly become very greasy when it rains and no amount of washing it with very hot soapy water or using glass cleaner improves it.
It appears spotlessly clean in the dry and crystal clear, but as soon as it rains it smears badly and no amount of screenwash clears it.
It is particularly bad driving towards the sun at this time of year when it is so low in the sky.
My wife suggests I should clean it inside and out with vinegar but I can’t stand the smell.
Any tips what else to try ??

A Trap

Get some cutting compound and a polishing machine and give it a good polish before a clean/polish with alcohol

Get the wife to use the vinegar for you!! Smile

Or you could try Barkeeprers' Friend, in powder form. ISTR I got mine from the Range, but it's available on line.

Another tip, find a good commercial cleaning supply company with a showroon and talk to them. I use a glass cleaner suppplied by one, but have the advantage of that company having a detailing nut as a showroom boss. The one I have glass is Brite by Clover of Whalley Bridge. Clean microfibre cloth and done regularly between snow foam and car clean.

Road film remover would likely work, but you need to be sure all residue is removed so perhaps finish with Isopropanol alcohol. The 99% stuff not general rubbing alcohol. Perhaps try it on a small area then finish with the Brite type of stuff.

And make sure the wiper blades are clean. In fact change them at the same time as a good screen clean. Amazing how much crud comes back off them. Cheers
Richard

Mike

Just had a chat with the guy I mentioned and his suggestion is to use a good qality multi surface cleaner, undiluted. Leave it on for a while to soak and then scrub with a non stick scouring pad, white, but similar to a green kitchen pad. Wash of with lots of water and repeat as required. Remove all the residue, which will remain, with a glass cleaner or IPA 99%.

You may need a sap remover too, if you're near trees.

Basically same as I do. The chemicals I use are Ubik 2000, a univeral cleaner and Brite class cleaner. These are from Clover Chemicals, 20 miles from Oldham. They have various distibutors so perhaps give them a call.

Hope it helps Cheers

Have you tried Autoglym glass polish (inside and outside of windscreen)? I find it very effective. The accumulation of dirt on the inside can be surprising. Maybe check/replace wiper blades too. Only Range Rovers since 1988

all the above are good tips - plus there are glass-specific microfibre cloths Mike
Use two, one to apply, the other to buff

. Cheers, Greg

Thanks, gents, plenty for me to try.
I will start again by changing the blades then the multi surface cleaner with plenty of elbow grease.
I am off into North Wales tomorrow, so it will be stood outside for a few days and in need of a good clean by Sunday when I return.
Cheers

Your Welcome Craig.

i have used it for years and on nasty nasty wind screens, lifts smokers grime, mud, and everything else that the mind wont work on right now.

its also good for clean up shiny surfaces and then you can polish properly after
