Cost of brake pads/linings

Hi

Brake pads and linings... SDV8 4.4L

What’s the minimum measurements for these before replacement?

Have been quoted a total of £900 ish for front and rear....

Whilst I want the correct job, any ideas of the right sort of price to pay.

Going outside of JLR, will that invalidate warranties?

Guidance appreciated Bow down

Bill

Ps What’s is a mystery ...just had the mot... I’m sure I received two videos , the first saying all ok, the second, borderline. The first video has gone missing!!!! Not in my trash, just vanished. You what ? Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

Find a local LR specialist to do the work and you can easily source the parts yourself.

That said changing pads and even discs is a very straightforward job and can be done by any competent mechanic or yourself if you have the time, inclination and some basic tools

As long as you use genuine LR parts your warranty won't be invalidated.

You can get the parts from forum sponsor Duckworths - send them a message with your reg and they'll give you prices for genuine parts.

Do you want to stick with LR branded parts, or are you happy to buy from the OEM supplier (Brembo)? Using LR parts and getting a receipt for fitting from a VAT registered garage will retain the manufacturer’s warranty, but not the Approved warranty.

I’ve just completed this project myself and sourcing the parts yourself and passing them to a trusted specialist will save a fortune!

2mm is as low as you want to go on pads. I’m gentle on brakes, but the rear pads are good for 30,000 miles, while I get 60,000 miles from all discs and the front pads.

Some dealers will insist on new pads and discs when they are less than half worn Censored Fortunately, some are a lot more honest than others.

For the best price on LR original prices, contact Dan at Duckworth’s (under the sponsors section).

I might be facing a question of honesty... I had two separate video reports , one for the service said A ok ,
The second for the MOT said PHEW nearly out replace all disks and all pads just 3mm

I’m very easy on brakes, I’m at 37,000 - so will get a second opinion ! Thanks for the heads up on the
alternative brands

Bill, definitely worth a second opinion and with the wheels off you should clearly be able to see if they are down to 2mm. The front pads have a huge contact patch and unless you’re a complete hooligan, should be good for some time yet Thumbs Up

Agreed that 37,000 miles seems low for replacement of pads and discs. My last 322 had about 57,000 miles on it when traded in and still on originals. I can believe that the 405 rears would wear more quickly as there seems much more brake dust on them than on the 322s, presumably the brake force is more evenly distributed on the 405. So unless you live on the sea shore, launch boats etc and get very rusty discs all the time a second opinion would be the thing.

Incidentally there are wear indicators on the pads, so you get notice on the screen that the pads need replaced. I got such a message on a 322 when far away from a dealer, on the Isle of Mull. On phoning the dealer I was told that even when the warning comes up on the screen there is still quite a bit of lining left, so if you don't have any screen warnings showing you should have a while to go.

I've only ever used OE pads and discs and never any problems. I recall that one needs to programme the 405 for replacement of pads via diagnostic machine, so DIY without that could lead to problems. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Bear in mind that the brake pads on the front of the V8 dwarf those on the rear, as they are huge discs with 6 pot calipers. With the greatly increased contact area, they ought to wear much more slowly even if the brake force is equal front to rear.

Be very careful about depending on the brake wear sensors, as there are a great many more pads than wear sensors and they only have to wear unevenly (as they often do) and you may get metal to metal contact on a pad that has no associated sensor Shocked

If you want to DIY, depending on your model year, you'll either need to have access to a diagnostics device, or know the complex sequence of "button pressing" to get the brakes to disengage before you can do any disc or pad changing.

With the 6 pot Brembos, it's well worth fitting a set of new pins as the originals on mine were definitely worth replacing, even when my car needed them changing at only 23 months old. The back ones are probably fine.

Just reading these posts, all way beyond my pay grade, I have to get someone to do it...

Firstly , I will double check to see if they really need doing... The give away is they were perfectly fine in the video prior to service & by the afternoon in the video for the MOT they were on 3mm and both shoes and pads were an advisory Shocked

Hey ho. Thanks chaps Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc
