L405 beckons

Right.

After a few good years my current L322 is getting very leggy at 120k miles and is costing me more and more to upkeep.

Wanted to get into an L405 for a while and been looking for a while. Key requirements are an ivory interior and screens for the kids who are too used to them now.

Had a lot of budget creep and now settled on a MY17.

I’ve also decided to go with my heart and buy a 5.0 S/C. Have no experience with them but everyone appears to rave about them and a friend who has an older version maintains its the best car she’s ever had. It maybe a bit silly given the central London driving it’ll mainly do (with jaunts up north) and given its baby brother in the garage is V8 sportscar. But what the hell. I love the burble.

Off to see a car at the weekend which seems great and I hope will be the one. Spec is on point. Only missing deployable steps and mudguards but don’t mind paying to have them fitted afterwards.

SO. After that long winded intro. Anything in particular you think I should be looking out for? I’m so excitable I fear I may just buy it on sight!

I always wanted deployable side steps... I got them and found myself just shutting them off, they're very annoying. With the car in access mode it seems lower than an l322. Good luck

Ive got them currently and found them useful for the kids and parents to get in and out. Theres also a cool factor i thought. Will see if i really need them on the L405 if ingress is easier on these.

Exciting times!

I’ve run a MY17 with RSE for the last 2 years and while the infotainment screen hardware and the instruments in the ‘17 are a big improvement, the infotainment software (especially in relation to the RSE) really benefits from an update to the latest version. Try and get in done in the deal. It takes around 3 hours to download, but only 1/2 an hour of actual labour.

Fixed steps help you in and out AND keep the mud off the side AND help keep car park door dings at bay (if you leave it with the suspension on “high” Thumbs Up

Mine has been relatively free of faults, the software has had to be updated twice, the gear selector had to be replaced as not emerging and retracting smoothly and there was a small oil leak from an oil cooler connector pipe. I have mudguards which I like, but not steps, which I don't, but then I don't generally have passengers who would need them. They are great cars, and when the 5.0SC gets going it is delightful. You'll need to keep an eye on the speed as it picks up so quietly and effortlessly. At lower speeds smooth, quiet and refined. Good luck with finding the right example. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Thanks that’s all really helpful.

As for the software update, is that all over the air or does it require some dealer involvement?

If the latter thanks as it makes sense to get it done at the same time as any extras.

It has to be done by the dealer. If the dealer tells LR that you’re having problems with the infotainment system, he should be able to claim the cost of the update as a warranty claim (though LR are now wise to only paying for 1/2 an hours’ labour! 🙄).

The software updates were at the dealer, presumably plugged into something, maybe an hour each. But these were in response to problems such as incorrect service messages, screen not coming on etc so not something that would just be done as a general update with no problem to necessitate it. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I have a further question if someone could help.

I am a bit of an audio snob and was slightly gutted to see the car I want to view doesn’t list a 1700W meridian as an option which has been specced.

However I have also seen a document online which suggests that in a 5.0 S/C in Autobiography trim, this is standard (as is park assist). Can anyone confirm this?! Would be great if so but I noticed in the pictures of the car I’m interested in, there doesn’t appear to be speakers and grilles in the back of the front seats which I thought is what the upgrades sound system has.

In any event I’m sure the standard system is an upgrade from what I have in the 2010 L322.

I'm in the US and on the AB the 1700 is standard.

The document I referred to seeing online was a US spec sheet. Wonder whether it applies to a UK spec car

It's not standard in UK. Mine does not have it. The standard 825 one is inferior to the top audio system fitted to the 2012 322 WM. Most of the time the 825 is OK, but in classical music bass can be a bit buzzy and droney, which was not the case with the WM. At the AB price it's a bit disappointing. The top system would have been £4,000 extra, so not that many cars have it.

I don't think park assist is standard either. I don't have a 2017 brochure, but the 2015 one I do have shows it as an extra, £900. Only Range Rovers since 1988

United Kingdom

Park Assist was a £935 option in 2017. And, yes, 1700W not standard on AB outside of US.

Be fussy, it’s worth the wait.
