2011 TDV8 4.4 Diesel rear dampers.

I have just replaced the rear dampers on our Vogue, they were the expensive active ones and set me back £550
However this was better than the list price of £350 each! Because I found the job was quite straightforward I thought it was worth sharing how it went.

I chocked the wheels, cracked the wheel nuts, jacked it up, secured it on axle stand, removed the wheel and used a trolley jack to support the wheel hub and just to remove the tension on the damper bolts.

I removed the bottom through bolt which came out very easily. The damper bush slots into the end of the bolt tube and this is what takes the load off the bolt, arrows indicate the bush and where it came out.

Back inside with spare wheel cover removed you can just see the top mounting nuts. Going around into the passenger seat with the seat folded forward and the carpet pulled up I got perfect access. Our dog cage got in the way slightly. With these undone and the wire carefully unplugged the damper fell out.


The cause of the problem is obvious, the expansion cylinder at the bottom had dropped off.

Replacing with the new one was the reverse order. Note I put the top in first with the thin felt gasket swapped across, reconnected plug into socket. Damper only fits one way and they are handed. Then I did the bottom through bolt remembering to slot the bush back into the tube end correctly. I torqued the top nuts to 63nm /46-lb-ft and did the bottom one finger tight initially. I refitted the wheel and lowered the car to the ground and then torqued up the bottom nut to 90 nm 66-lb-ft. The idea of this was to let the bush find it's settling place before tightening. I should have used fresh nuts and bolts but they were all in very good condition and so a little thread lock was applied instead. Obviously carpets refitted and so on. One side at a time for safety and I didn't let the hubs dangle on the air bags to avoid over stretching them. It is a big heavy thing so proper lifting and supporting kit required !!!
Time about two hours with the phaffing with jacks and so on.
Obviously don't attempt this unless you are completely confident in what you are doing and have the proper equipment to use. This post was only documenting my experience not a workshop guide.

The ride was transformed!

Keep the undamaged one as a spare for either side as the top bracket can be removed to allow the shock to be fitted to the other side.

Hi sorry for the delay in replying, the first symptoms I felt rather than saw were a feeling that the rear end was much more lively and bouncy than normal. It wallowed in corners and just felt "different". On inspection I saw that one of the reservoirs had completely detached from the shock body and all the oil had gone West. Oil leaking down the damper body is a sign that all is not well.

If you've ever had a classic RR and disconnect the dampers, then that is exactly the effect you get. The rear axle 'tramps and bounces and feels like the back end is sliding. Mine went last week and replaced them.
Ride is transformed and is just flat again on corners.
it is an easy job to do.

I agree with the symptome above. For me, I noticed that the car was pitching more on uneven roads. I got my local Indy to do the work. He also replaced the top rear suspension bushes and cleaned and lubricated the handbrake for a total cost of £880, including 3 hrs labour. the car handles so much better now. 2011 Vogue TDV8 4.4

2010 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Alaska White

I was asking what the symptons of worn dampers were because my 2010 is feeling "funny " at the rear.

The rear of the car feels "solid" as though the only resilience is the tyres and the rear left has a distinct thump when there's a pothole.

Suspected a damper (or 2) as both are slightly misting up so took them off this morning but both seem ok.

Discovered that (both sides) the lower wishbone, INNER , rear bushes are worrn out (the mot guy did say they were worn) as the steel insert has parted company with the rubber.

However, the thump is heavier than that would give and I think its down to the forward bush on the rear subframe (left side).

The rubber is sticking out of the top of the tube so that the steel parts are touching at the bottom of the tube and it looks quite different to the other side. I also had a sneeky peek at another FF which parks up a mile away and that one makes all of my subframe bushes looking a bit tired.

So, its new subframe bushes and 2 new lower wishbones to fit! Shocked

Mine seems to roll much more than I would expect and I'm wondering if this is down the rear dampers being past their best. They don't appear to be leaking though.

My wife really doesn't like the ride and it's certainly much worse then her X-Trail in this respect.

Does that sound like the rear dampers to you guys? Its on 120k. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE
