"Service Required"

I have been getting this message intermittently so today I got my IIDTool out and reset the service counter, message gone. Would I be right in assuming that if anything needs doing it will just come back or another light will appear on the dash. I did get 10L of oil and a filter so could change it but the car has only done about 7k since the last service and will only do about 3k to the next (12 months) - is it possible that they "forgot" to reset the counter? Geoff

had my car serviced at battersea landrover dealer and they forgot to reset the service reminder.

headoffice updated the online db which they didn't do either and then another dealer was able to clear the reminder.

I got one between scheduled services and was actually due to the diesel content in the oil being above 8% so had to have an oil change (due to me not making as many long journeys anymore and so no prolonged speeds over 50mph). Steve

DPF filter full used to happen on the L322 if you didn't do enough long journeys... but in the engine oil? --

Don’t ignore the service required notification - your oil is contaminated, probably due to short journeys 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Well in my early panic I ordered oil and filter so will change it anyway. However I’ve got to admit to being more than a little confused about wether my car is affected no short journeys, obviously it doesn’t use ad blu and it’s a v8 not a v6 also the indicator is “dumb” it doesn’t actually check the oil.

Since I reset it it’s stayed off (if it was “smart” and there was something wrong it would just have come straight back on) but as I say I’ll change the oil anyway as i’ve got it. Geoff

Changed the oil today, well paid someone to do it, as a precaution. Unfortunately I now know why I bought some new wet wipes to clean the oily steering wheel - they put a cover on the seat.

I bought the oil cheap (another post on here), the filter from Opie so all up just over100 quid inc labour - what price peace of mind? Geoff

I honestly don’t think you can look at oil and judge if it is still fit for purpose..

I say this because I have had to drain 1 litre out of mine after only 50 miles and I was gobsmacked by the colour of it after such a short life.
I know it would still be perfectly safe to use for another few thousand miles, but unless the engine is flushed in some way very often to clean out the carbon build up, then regular “ peace of mind” oil changes is the only guarantee to long engine life.

Sorry Stan, when I pay someone to do something I don't watch them I just go somewhere else and drink tea - so I didn't see the old oil. Just picked the car up when he rang me to say it was ready, there was a bit of oil left over he gave it to me and said it was for "topping up" as diesels can use oil and then showed me how to check the oil level - I feigned interest. Geoff

Geoff,
I strongly recommend that next time you go out and get the car up to normal working temperature, when you stop the engine, wait 20 minutes then check the oil level.
It is so easy to accidentally put in too much oil when changing it.
If you get an overfilled message, then get him to suck out 0.5 l before it does any damage.
If it reads anywhere between 3/4 and full , then you know he did a good job.
