The guides become brittle due to high running temps of the engine. NO choice but to take the front off and replace the guides. Mine cost £3000.

If you still have the bits then weight them and whats left, compare the weight to replacements & that should give you an idea of how much is actually unaccounted for.

Yep you will have to access the filter and flush out. Holidayhicken on this forum is my SME (subject matter Expert) on this engine as well as JohnBoyAirey.

80 to 100k miles seems about average. It's just a maintenance item. Mine we done by PO at 110k miles. So at 190 to 200k I'll do them and the Besian Vanos fix. |

Just a maintenance item? At GBP3000 (nearly AU$5,500)? Crikey! That's nearly the price of a secondhand L322.

Never, to my knowledge - not in the 40k I've had her anyway. Wasn't a potential problem I was aware of. |

Been watching videos - it does look a lot of work but not necessarily that difficult (notwithstanding specific tools needed and encountering bolts that won't move) |

Maintenance. Do you wait until your oil stops lubricating before changing it? Of course not. Most don't have a sample sent for evaluation. We just change it at 5-10k miles. Here a timing chain kit goes for about $400 usd with a lifetime warranty. Yeah there is some wrench (spanner) time involved. Good time to do anything else on the way. Even an alternator or starter is a maintenance item if you want uninterrupted use. We usually just wait until they break because when they break they don't cause something else to break. I guess an alternator could take out a battery too. A sloppy timing chain could get ugly real fast. We now know "sealed for life" means change every 60k miles or it's life will be short. Don't confuse routine maintenance with. Preventative or Predictive maintenance. In an ideal engine we could easily inspect those timing chain guides to check for cracks and wear. We can't . We can predict when these guides and chains need replacement from average miles at failure and turn it into preventative maintenance. Just another BMW idiosyncratic designs. |
