The road round the back of Ulswater is interesting. If you go up to Pooley Bridge then follow the narrow road to Howtown, keep going up the very steep hill section past St Peters Church you can get access on to the fells of Martindale.
I have walked round the southern tip of the lake back into Patterdale, but I am not sure if the gates are locked during summer months, in which case you would have to return back via Pooley Bridge.
If you have any interest in history, check out the wartime story associated to St Peters church , and the stained glass window dedicated to the Merchant Navy.
The views from the top of Martindale looking across the lake are among the best in the area, ...stunning.
Mike.
PS.
Last time I went I actually parked up at Howtown and got the ferry to Glenridding, then walked back around the southern tip of the lake, which is moderately easy, but on a clear day, breathtaking. G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999
